    I'm interested to know which forecasting site(s) do people use when planning a cycle? I find the Irish met site really isnt much use,
    cheers

    I always use Met Eireann site. It's usually spot on. What shortcomings have you found?

    It doesn't show future rainfall. Sites like yr.no cover that far better.

    Try here - right on Boards- http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055579971&page=109
    From my reading above this morning learned that low-level mist does not show up on radar. We've had too many days of that here recently.

    or put your own in here--http://www.yr.no/place/ireland/kerry/dingle_peninsula/hour_by_hour.html.

    Their mountain forecast is particularly useful at this time of year as it gives the forecast for the higher elevation so you can check to see if it's likely to be icy up in the hills.

    Metcheck for 3 or 7 day forecast

    3day - http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/today.asp?zipcode=dublin
    7day - http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/7days.asp?zipcode=dublin

    (might be bus to work on Monday :eek: )

    Met.ie rain radar to see what rain is en-route

    http://www.met.ie/latest/rainfall_radar.asp?ani=y

    backed up with

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/

    yr.no is ok - oddly enough both times when I have been in Norway their forecasts have been inaccurate.

    and finally - current road conditions from http://www.nratraffic.ie/weather/default.asp?RegionId=0

    I also look out the window now and again

    I look outside ... look at the sky, get back in the house and dress appropriately-ish.

    Very accurate if you're near an airport:
    http://aviationweather.gov/adds/metars/

    Fill in the appropriate airport code in the text box (comma between for multiple airports):
    Dublin = EIDW
    Shannon= EINN
    Cork= EICK
    Knock= EIKN
    Belfast = EGAA

    Check the Metar and Taf boxes
    Select "Translated" button

    Submit the form.

    I have used met.ie for two years now to get temp, wind speed and direction. No complaints on their 3 day forecasts. They are good enough to be able to decide what to wear and which direction to go out.
    Normally for me though if there is white stuff on the lawn I stay put, if not I go.

    Correct. Three reasons for this.
    1. Radar reflectivity of raindrops is a function of diameter (D) to the power of six (D^6). This means there is very rapid fall off as drop(let)s get smaller and the radar may not see drizzle.
    2. The radar antenna looks slightly up from horizontal (min elevation 0.5 degrees) so the minimum height it sees increases with distance from the antenna.
    3. The curvature of the earth means that that minimum height increases even further.

    Met.ie is usually my first port of call. If the reports arent favourable ill have a look at breakingnews.ie/weather. If i dont like the look of their reports either ill head over to http://www.weather-forecast.com/locations/Dublin/forecasts/latest

    After that ill resign myself to cycling in the rain.

    Also ive started to do what caroline suggested and simply look out the window in the mornings. I should of cycled today but alas my gear is wet from last night. Need more gear. MORE!

    as of this week im starting to use my own blackberry app for checking the weather. I made it myself :D

    app name is BBSpeedOMeter (its over on the mobihand/crackberry store)

    working on a few updates at the moment and the one im testing out at the moment is a weather feature. it averages from a couple of sources online. so now all i have to do is open me speedometer app it'll check the weather then using that data it'll tell me what to wear then while im gettin changed it'll calculate a best route from my previous trips stored in the app based on wind direction, keeping me away from mountain tops if its too windy, and havin the wind on me back on the way home etc ;)

    I know that doesnt really answer any question but hey a chance for a plug is a chance for a plug

    Bumping this 5yr old thread and wondering what weather apps/sites you all find the most reliable now? I had a look at 5 day forecasts and between 4 services I got everything from "rainstorms" to "partially sunny" for this weekend. I'm planning a bit of bikepacking down the canals.

    I use yr.no as my main source for forecasts. I also use the rainfall radar on met.ie along with the Aeroweather app for Dublin & Baldonnell to get a good sense of the rain & wind direction just before I head out.

    I use:

    http://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Leins...r_by_hour.html

    https://www.nratraffic.ie/weather/

    NRA website tells you road and air temperature and is updated quite frequently

    and Predict Wind app (free)

    I use the rain radar at www.raintoday.co.uk as well as yr.no

    Find yr.no great. Can see at a glance what is coming up.

    Any forecast can change quickly though. Sometimes within less than 12 hours. This is just a feature of our weather patterns rather than lack of accuracy I'd imagine.

    Have been blessed on a couple of sportives this year... Sean Kelly & the West Cork Rebel tour with systems clearing just in time ahead of initial predictions.
