I finally took the plunge and tried upgrading my old laptop to Karmic one last time. To my amazement it installed and booted to the GUI with no apparent problems. It completely crashed after 5 minutes of use though. I'm going to reupgrade now to Lucid to see will it run at all and maybe even Maverick but my guess is I'll be reinstalling Jaunty before too long.

I think I might follow you in going back to Jaunty! I found a nice file in /etc/modprobe.d/after searching for why my wireless speeds had taken a nosedive. It is something like 'inteldisable11n' and if you open it up you'll find that n has been disabled so your adapter will only be giving you g speeds. I don't remember seeing this in the release notes though.

I commented out the line in that file and my wireless speeds are back to normal. This doesn't solve the problem of Gnome going back to its default theme from time to time though.

    I'm having 2 problems

One with it not auto logging onto my wireless. So I have to click it everytime. It's strange as I have it set the wireless auto connect, and my users password is the same as my keyring password so I don't get asked for that. But it doesn't auto connect

The other is with the file manager (Nautilus). On startup it seems to bring up about 50 windows which start and go away for about 10 seconds. Then sometimes when I shutdown it refuses to close automatically and you have to force it.

It may be caused because I installed a few plugins etc for it, so I'll have to look at those

I've got mine running fine after a few headaches. Had a problem with getting the right driver for my network printer and a problem with a wireless driver but apart from that everything seems ok. I'd advise people who don't want to run into issues to stick with 10.04 as it was less hassle for me :)

Do you have a Broadcom BCM4322 by any chance?

Pretty major bug involving the that chip whereby the chip defaults to 2MBps when on battery.

No, I'm on an intel 5300. The file that I mentioned disables N for any card using the iwlagn driver. I haven't noticed any problems since I have removed the restriction so things are looking up!

edit: Here's the file, and you can see that I commented it out with the #.
    barry@viper:~$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/intel-5300-iwlagn-disable11n.conf
    #options iwlagn 11n_disable=1 11n_disable50=1

According to the Debian wiki this driver supports the following cards: WiFi Link 4965, 5100, 5300, 5350, 5150, 1000, 6000, 6250. If anybody has one of the above and an N capable router I would check to see if 10.10 has it disabled.

Why would ubuntu comment out that line though??

I just couldn't resist updating today when the Jaunty support ran out. Lucid installed OK but it was the usual bull**** - TV card no longer supported, webcam doesn't work any more, sound is crap and fonts are all weird. I don't imagine they've fixed any of this in Maverick so I reckon it's time to ditch Ubuntu as I really can't be dealing with this **** of everything being wrecked every time I upgrade.

Reports of the card locking up after a few minutes use.

Disabling N seems to be a workaround.

Yep, that was the reason. Thankfully I've had no such hassle with the Lenovo version in my T400 with a netgear wndr37000 router.

Edit. I missed it but this is indeed release noted: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes#Networking%20&%20WiFi

Come to think of it, 10.10 has stopped my webcam from working although I never really use it anyways.

Is it safe enough to install updates from the update manager or will it just break more?? :P

Updated yesterday. Seems pretty slick, no issues (yet!)

Sound keeps cutting out in Youtube as well. Why oh why did I upgrade to this trash?

I should have stayed with Lucid.

I think I'll just do a reinstall when Debian Squeeze comes out.

What other distros have you tried? Ubuntu definitely doesn't like your pc.

Jaunty loved it, everything worked fine. Everything since has been atrocious - install, spend a week trying to fix these basic problems, give up and go back to Jaunty. I'm trying to work out if Mint is actually an improvment on ubntu or if it's the same half-baked ****e.

Well, that seems to work at least. :(
I've never seriously considered switching to Windows before but I have to say I'm almost tempted.

windows 7 is rock solid and reliable.
    I use Linux mint too.

pickarooney: have you tried the Debian Edition of Mint?
Rolling release instead of waiting for Ubuntu updates!
Only in 32bit version at the moment though.

That's partly the problem. It works sometimes, it doesn't work other times. Ubuntu 10.* doesn't shutdown on my Dell for instance. So you have these fundamental problems that no one wants to fix because they only affect a tiny proportion of the userbase.

And then when you complain that Ubuntu isn't stable on ubuntuforums.com you get a barage of insults from fanboys who will call you a dick because you questioned the overall supremacy of Linux.

Shutdowns in 3 seconds here :)
    Win 7 can take 15+

Sorry but that happens everywhere. The most popular OS attracts the most users... which leads to having more idiots on there.

I highly recommend you to post a bug report if you have a problem with the distribution - otherwise there's no way the developers can know that there's an issue. OTOH - there's probably a bug report out there already (have a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ )

Seriously considering it. I've got most of the sound problems with Lucid fixed now although youtube still a bit dodgy. It's impossible to get the TV tuner working and even though I never watch TV it's annoying me!

Bug report was posted last March, and "Triaged". In fairness, I'm doing nothing to fix it, and open-source software is a primarily profit-less effort, so I don't mean to come across as a moaner. It's just extremely frustrating, especially because Ubuntu is a fantastic OS when it's working for you.

I'm getting a shutdown problem on Lucid now since yesterday. It just doesn't want to logout or shutdown from the GUI any more.

Check your logs. Might be a DE/WM problem.

It was trying and failing to save the WM session. I removed the old one and now it's fine.
