They fly to terminal 1 in Madrid Barajas Airport. It's on the north east side of the city and connected to the centre by metro and bus. It's not your typical out in the sticks Ryanair airport. Enjoy Madrid

Is Madrid worth a visit and how does it compare in cost to here?

I was there recently. If you like Spanish food, lots of dried pork, then there's plenty of places. The Prado is an excellent museum of art. A day trip to Toledo is worth it too, but take the bus as it's quicker than the train.
I wouldn't rate it highly for things to see compared to Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin, etc..
I'm not a shopper so I can't give you any hints there. Overall it does have an excellent transport system so a few days would do you. Three days would be enough I'd imagine.

I do like the people, they aren't as reserved or cold as in other European cities, I think it's actually the best thing about the place.

on its own probably not, if you are going for a weekend where you go to the football first and bars after then yeah; however you can easily combine madrid and barcelona these days with the high-speed direct train taking about 2hr 30mins (a little longer if it stops at certain points)

cost wise i found it cheaper than here

    Thanks Rossie.

Now thinking of Rome or Barcelona. Trying to do it as cheap as possible. Found cheap flights and a cheap hostel, but not sure which is more expensive for beer, food, sightseeing etc.

    More research to be done.
