Washing machine - intermittent fatty deposits on clothes

Two or three times a year my washing machine leaves brown fatty-like deposits on clothes (see attached photo). Not all clothing in that wash is affected.

It happens regardless of whether I use non-bio or biological washing liquid. I always put the washing liquid into a ball thing inside the drum.

When it happens I have to scrape the deposits off the affected clothes, put Vanish on them, clean out the washing machine drum and rewash the clothes. It's a pain.

Any ideas on the likely cause?

It looks to me as though they're picking up gunk that's in the fold of the rubber seal around the door.
To avoid gunk you need to always leave the machine door open when it's not being used, and wipe the rubber seal regularly with a damp cloth.

I do clean it when I notice some build-up though I close the door after use.

Is closing the door really causing the gunk to build up?

It might not be the main problem but it would add to it, also it can cause the seal to go mouldy. If you run a 90 degree wash once a month without any clothes in the machine it helps to keep it clean. There's a thread running in this forum at the moment about using vinegar etc, you should have a look.

I found the biggest cause of gunk to be the small and mighty bottles of liquid detergent - they caused a smell too.

Uh oh, I just changed from Tesco Non Bio to Persil Small and Mighty yesterday.

I'll look at the other thread, thanks.
