    Have a look at:

    http://www.pricescope.com/forum/proposal-ideas/

for information on new york and romantic places to propose - will also have details on rockafeller.

There's also a forum called rocktalky on that site - they are very helpful if you want information on engagement rings (most of the people posting there are women so you can get their perspective)

Best of luck, PM me if you need any help

Hold on a wee minute there magneticimplse-You're entitled to your opinion but there's no need to be rude to others. You cannot speak for all women.I've been up top of empire and the top of Rockefeller has better views, and in my opinion is just as romantic.I tend to trust the opinion of people who have actually experienced what I intend doing i.e buy ring in NYC etc.You can disagree but try do so in a civilised, constructive manner

im not disputing the views...im saying what is more romantic! and i have been to new york and i bought a tiffany diamond ring...so its not like i dont know what im talking about!! and im a woman too...and women think about location of where they would like to be proposed too more then men!!!

i cannot speak for all women? well i didnt know you were a woman too.

    im not rude im honest!!!

and for your info, even if men propose, doesnt mean they get it right. my friend was mortified when the guy gave her a necklace shaped box instead of a ring shaped box when he proposed!!! so its better to ask women for advice then men. ask your female friends what they think...but dont just rely on 1 man!!! because men dont always get it right themselves. its not like shes going to tell him he did it wrong, but she sure is going to tell all her mates that

Under the christmas tree on the ice skating ring would be far more romantic then on top of a building...especially if she suffers from vertigo. I would never consider i suffered from vertigo but its not fun if your stuck on a building.
Christmas tree on the bottom of rockafeller building...ice skating....what can be more romantic then that? and apparently they will even clear the ice rink for wedding proposals!!!

Oh please, who ever goes up the rockafeller building??

everyone knows the empire state building is better. when was the rockafeller building in sleepless in seatle or affair to remember?? the rockafeller centre was never in any romantic movies...so why would you suggest it!!!

its like saying paris and the effiel tower and suggesting the arc du triumph to propose on!!!

I've been up the Empire State and the Rockefeller Centre 3 times each. I proposed up the Empire State, but it's awful busy. Very hard to get on one knee without getting a tourist's backside in your face - hardly romantic. It is classically the better option, but I do agree that the Rockefeller has better views of NYC, mainly because you can see the Empire State from there.

The Engagement on Ice package offers front-of-the-line access ensuring that the lucky couple can head straight onto the ice for a romantic spin around the Rink. As the session ends, the other skaters will disappear, leaving the couple alone on the ice. “Their song” will begin to play, setting the scene for the perfect proposal. Once she (or he) says “yes,” the Rink staff can deliver a bouquet (dropped off ahead of time by the proposer) to the new fiancée before the couple takes one last lap around the Rink. To complete the experience, the two toast to their good fortune rink-side with flutes of Champagne and can enjoy a celebratory dinner at the Rock Center Café at a table looking out at Rockefeller Center.
The cost of the Engagement on Ice package is $250, from Dec. 1 through Jan. 4, 2008; $200 from Jan. 5 through April, all inclusive. Reservations are required and availability is limited. Call 212-332-7655 to schedule an Engagement on Ice, which includes:
    • Admission front-of-the-line access for two
    • Two skating passes
    • Skate rentals for two
    • Signature song played during or after the proposal (music provided by proposer)
    • The option to drop off a bouquet of flowers that can be skated out and presented to new fiancée
    • Private time on the ice for proposal and ‘victory lap’
    • Champagne toast at rink-side restaurant Rock Center Café
    • For an additional $200, a three-course dinner for two is available at Rock Center Café. Window tables can be reserved.
Adding to the occasion, this year marks The Rink’s 76th Anniversary. Located off of Fifth Avenue, between 49th and 50th streets, The Rink first opened on Christmas Day in 1936 as the premier artificial outdoor skating pond built in New York City, complete with modern amenities: night skating, a heated house for changing skates, piped-in music and rink-side dining. Today the Rink is an historic landmark, open seven days a week from October until early April. For more information on The Rink and its special packages, visit www.therinkatrockcenter.com or call 212-332-7655.

Women know where are nice places to be proposed are and top of the rockafeller centre is not one of them....the only thing romantic about that building is the ice skating ring.
    My wife thinks otherwise :)

I did it on top of the rockefeller center with the Empire State building in the background. When we came down, there was a guy doing the ice rink thing. My wife preferred our one because she didn't like the idea of a few hundred people standing around watching and taking photos. Same reason why she was happy with it at the top of the Rockefeller centre instead of empire state - there was no-one else there at the time, but there was a queue to go up the empire state building.

Rockafeller provides a full view of central park as well as midtown, whereas empire state only provides midtown. What is depicted in movies is irrelevant.

That's true. I actually think that would be a lovely place to do it since you mentioned that. :)

Well, its defo NYC.Was thinking about going to Rockefeller Centre first thing in the morning on Xmas Eve (we land day before).Hoping there wont be a big crowd at the top,I know there'll be a few but wouldn't want a major crowd around me at the big moment.Just think it would be pretty cool to be looking at that brilliant New York view and then pop the question!

It all depends on how you want to propose, but I managed to do so the other day with people all around and I'm pretty sure that none of them knew what was going on. Obviously if you're going down on one knee it will attract attention, but it's perfectly possible to ask your girlfriend to marry you quietly and discreetly. I know I'm glad that I did it that way, it was just her and me in our own little world for a few minutes. Then we had to get in from the rain. :)

Anyway, however you do it, best of luck, it's a brilliant feeling when she says yes.

Magneticimpulse, tone it down. Just because you don't agree with another poster's ideas doesn't give you an excuse to be rude.

    Hi All,

Thanks for all your tips and advice. As the original poster of this thread I thought I'd let you know how we got on.

In relation to the money, we decided to bring a certain amount of cash over with us and I had pre-loaded my credit card before leaving Ireland. I had informed the CC company that there would be a large transaction going through on a particular week - this was to ensure that I didn't have any problems with my card while over in NYC. Upon talking to the jeweller, we agreed to pay the full amount in cash. I was then able to go to a number of different banks in Manhattan to withdraw cash from my credit card account. This way I was able to gather the cash until I had to sum required to pay for the ring.

We ended up buying our ring in Hanikens. We went to a number of different jewellers around Manhatta, including Tiffany's, just to get an idea of price and what you get for your buck.

However, based on the recommendations here, we decided to go to Hanikens in the diamond district first and we could not have been happier. Although it was difficult to find, we were very happy with the overall experience. From the started we were warmly greeted by the owner and his daughter. They were extremely helpful explaining the different diamonds and settings and at no point did they try to put us under any pressure. We were fortunate to see another Irish couple come in to get their rings cleaned which they had purchased there before. They gave us the thumbs up when we asked about their experience - so that was very reassuring.

We ended up with a GIA certified diamond. When we came home we got it valued in C.Clarke Jewellers in Dublin and she valued it at double what we paid. So we were extremely happy with the outcome.

    Hi All,

I know this thread is somewhat finished but id be very grateful for some advice.
I plan to propose to my better half next Dec (2011) so am beginning to look into costs and ideas etc...
Ideally i want to propose at home in Ireland but give her a token ring and then surprise her by flying her somewhere for 4-5 days for a celebration hol and to most importantly pick out the ring.
I have been looking around the net at what the best places are to buy and New York has been coming up- we have never been and we would both love to go(she especially would love to go there) so i think im almost settled on New York but would love other peoples recommendations. Originally i wanted to bring her to Dubai as rings are such good value there supposedly but im now thinking New York. Antwerp is also meant to be good but id rather New York as i feel this would be more special. Any other suggestions?

Budget wise- everyone has their own opinion and are entitled to it. Mine would be something special obviously but not spending crazy amounts in my opinion like anything over €5k. I am not in this position to afford this and would rather take her away to pick it out-pay her flights and accom etc and make it special. I would be thinking ring wise in the range of approx €3k. Do people know if i would get something nice for this. What are average prices etc? From what ive looked up it seems average price was just under this. I know also that she thinks spending too much on an engagement ring is madness.

First step for me really is deciding on a location so any recommendations would be great but as i say im almost set on New York but would love to hear other peoples views. Also as regards token rings, what would you feel i should be spending?

    Thanks lads
