External drive not working on popcorn hour

Guys, those of you with popcorn hours (A110). I can plug a USB key into any one of the two ports & it indexes & plays no problem. I tried it with a 200GB powered external drive as well as a 500GB usb powered & self powered & I get a very brief "USB Failed" message flashing up & it won't read. I've tried the drives…

I've tried the drives connected to my mac & macbook & no problems. Any ideas ?

What format is the drive? FAT32 and EXT3 should work fine but many media players dont like NTFS.
