Peugeot 407 RD4 + Peugeot Planet...

I've a Peugeot 407 ST with an RD4 (factory fitted). I'm keen on getting the Dension GW300 with the white iPod cable (for my iPhone 3GS) and I've sourced some prices for fitting and supplying these parts.

The problem is though, I need someone to enable AUX1/2 on the radio as, apparently, it's not enabled when shipped. I understand you need the Peugeot Planet 2000 software to do this and, most significantly, the correct interface cable to get at the I/O port in the console of the car.

I can get a copy of the software, but not the cable alone. Otherwise, I'd certainly give it a crack myself. I've contacted a couple of Peugeot dealers near me but absolutely none have gotten back to me on pricing, which is frustrating.

    Does anyone know:

    1. If there's anywhere else (cheaper) I can get this done? Or if there's a cable out there I can borrow?
    2. If it's possible to check if this was already enabled? It's a used car which did have some type of phone kit fitted. May have included an activation of the AUX port(s).

    Thanks folks!

    Hi WetDaddy,
If you fancy a trip to Galway i can enable it for you,.
if it has been already enabled it should come up when you press the source button.
less than 15mins will enable it....:)

Try a UK dealer for the cable.
Main reason for this is that more UK cars would have had the upgrade stereo fitted and so they may have dealt with such a request more often.
I sold Peugeot for 4 years and only fitted the RD4 to one 407 coupe in that time.

The main reason i'd imagine irish dealers arent responding is ignorance. They're prob afraid to order it in case its the wrong part and they're stuck with it in stock.

I should have one soon in Cork if you're down this direction. I asked my dealer putting in the Dension too and they have a minimum charge of an hour labour (€60 + VAT) to hook up to the computer. BTW if I was you I'd hold off for the new Dension Gateway Five which adds full Bluetooth connectivity to the car (incl wheel controls and dash display).

Nice one Padraig...I'm tempted to fit one of those to my own 407...
http://www.dension.com/ the added wheel controls and dash display is a major plus....;)

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Row and Padraig Mor, if I was near Galway or Sligo, I'd definitely take you up on the offer. Unfortunately, that's looking unlikely! If either of you are coming to Dublin any time soon and fancy meeting up with me and my 407, please let me know. There'd be a coffee / pint in it for you! ;)

Row, I tried the Source button and sure enough, AUX doesn't show up. Thanks for the tip.

The Gateway 5 definitely looks interesting. I may hold off for the Peugeot Specs and see how it fares. The GW300 doesn't allow steering stalk controls?

Yeah, it looks the job. As you know Ron I got a Bluetooth kit recently with the intention of installing it and a Gateway 300. Was just about to order the 300 when this was announced and will definitely hold off for it. Peugeot/Citroen version officially released now although not listed yet. Handy too coz I can't fit in all the crap for the bluetooth kit behind the radio anyway!

GW300 does allow stalk controls - it is in effect the exact same piece of equipment as Peugeot's cunningly named 'USB Box' (Dension make it OEM for Peugeot). The Gateway Five is essentially a 300 with added Bluetooth.

Aha, I see. I've sourced the 300 from JDM down in Bray, who've included the price of fitting it. I think it comes out at about €230 or so... But considering I have to get the AUX enabled by a Peugeot Dealer (unless I can get to Cork / Galway ;)), would it be worth while getting the "USB Box" off the Dealer as well to save myself some hassle? I'm thinking it might give me some leway in bargaining the price of the AUX enabling. I don't want to get charged an hour's labour for 15 minutes work if I can avoid it.

Are the "USB Box" and the GW300 identical, considering Dension make it for OEMs?

Also, I see the pricing for the GW300 is a lot better on some other EU sites. A German site has it (incl. the "white" iPod cable) for about €140 delivered. I'll see if I can hunt down the link.

I *think* (and you would really want to check this!) Citroen (and so Peugeot?) charge c. €190 for the USB Box. I *think* fitting is extra on top of this. I've seen the official install guide (can have a look for it if you want) and IIRC the 'official' fitting time is 1hr 20 mins (so my dealer would charge €80 + VAT). Total approx €300. Again, you should confirm this. You could also try fitting it yourself if you can get one cheap - it looks like a piece of piss to do if you're any way handy at all.

USB Box and GW300 are essentially identical. I think the GW300 also has an Aux-in socket which the USB Box doesn't - although the iPod/USB connectors render it redundant! There are some cosmetic differences too. USB Box installs as, well.....a box in the glovebox. With the GW300, the box goes behind the dash with only connection cables leading into the glovebox - a somewhat neater solution which also installs easier.

BTW if it's just iPod you're after (and not USB) you could also use the cheaper Gateway 100.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing that link.

Well, it's all happening this morning: Got a call from Windsor Motors who are going to check out the price of enabling the port(s) and will get back to me.

I've also hunted down that German site I was on about: http://www.caraudio24.de/Zubehoer/Aux-In-Adapter/KfZ-spezifisch/Citroen/Dension-Gateway-300-Dock-Cable-iPod-iPhone-USB-AUX-Interface-Citroen-Peugeot-RD4::16257.html

They've a good selection of stuff. The above link includes the "White" iPod cable, which is important as it'll charge my iPhone 3GS. I think I'll go with what you said, Padraig Mor, and install it myself. I may want it somewhere other than the glovebox too, considering it's my phone and I'll want to see who's calling, etc. I've a bluetooth headset that works just fine for me, so although the geek in me wants to wait for the Gateway 5, I think if I'm realistic the GW300 will suit my needs perfectly :)

I understand that the instructions for enabling the AUX1 port on the RD4 from Peugeot apparently have the incorrect photo? Something like the instructions are for the AUX1 but the photo in the instructions is AUX2 or something? I'm just worried about these guys screwing it up and me having to wait more time.

Is there any difference between the two AUX ports? Is it work my while getting both enabled, just in case? Can't imagine what for, but better to do it now than in 18 months time when I figure out I have another use for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

P.S. Just got a call from Bluebell out in Ballyfermot who say they can do it in 45 mins for €72.16 incl. VAT. That happens to be right beside the DataCentre I manage, so I may just take a trip out there...!

One is for Aux-in, one for CD changer (which the Dension uses).

Thanks Padraig... Do you know which is which? And should I just get them BOTH enabled? I'm presuming it's just a couple of minutes work to do the second...

As you look into the Quadlock connector on the back of the stereo, the AUx-in is on the left and the CD changer is on the right. Not sure what the story is with enabling if there's nothing connecting but I don't see any harm in it.

Got my Lexia/Proxia/PP interface cable set from China yesterday. Unfortunately the accompanying documentation and software seems to have never seen a native English speaker!

Ok, I'm just back from the dealer. They asked me what I wanted to attach "Is it a USB Box?" and I said "Yes, it's the same thing but a different brand". I got the car back and they let me know they've enabled AUX1. I think they said "one of the ports was for a CD Changer so we've done AUX1", although I can't remember the exact phrasing.

Before I left the car in though, I did say that I've read around online that the Peugeot instructions apparently have some errors in them and if they have any problems, they're to give me a shout.

Sure enough, it shows up well and good on the radio when I press the Source button: "Auxilary 1" with a little image of a 3.5mm jack. I'm now waiting on one of you kind folks to say "That's the wrong port, it should have been AUX2"... :| What do ye think?

Padraig Mor, I know you gave me instructions on which is which at the back of the radio, but unfortunately I just dropped the car into them and they did all the removing of the radio, etc.

Any ideas anyone? I haven't purchased the GW300 yet, so I can't test!

Er.....That's the wrong port, it should have been AUX2 (well, CD changer)!

Yeah, if the little jack icon comes up they've definitely enabled the wrong one I think unless they've also enabled the CD changer. Both the USB Box and Gateway definitely use the CD changer port (they fool the stereo into thinking they are a CD changer y'see). As the USB Box is an offical PSA part they really should know the difference. Another visit is in order! BTW did they charge €72 to do this?

BTW you were saying earlier about wanting to see who was calling on your phone etc - Dension also supply an active mount for iPhones which will link to the Gateway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

Gah. I had a feeling as much... Thanks for confirming though, Padraig. I think you're right; a visit back after a call in the morning is in order. She *definitely* said to me "Is it for a USB Box?" and I said "Yes, the same thing.", and I went out of my way to explain that there has been confusion in the past so if in doubt at all, give me a call.

I'd like to think that they'll enable AUX2 instead for free, considering they screwed it up. I'll let you know how I get on anyway. And yes, it was €72.16 in total. 45 mins work, they said. I'm skeptical it took that long, but hey, you can't really argue with it now can you?

I'll check out the Dension phone products too, thanks for the heads up!

Sorry for buttin in Lads but if i remember correctly its only aux 1 thats usally activated.......I maybe wrong....I'll check it out on my own 407 to make sure..:)
Also if i remember correctly...when activating aux 1 you also need to enable the boot cd changer in the bsi otherwise it may pick up a communication error
(This will not be dispayed on your screen)
    I'll have a look when i get a chance...:)
    Ron.

Cheers Ron. I'll hang on to see what you find... If I call them back, I'm going to do it sooner rather than later so it's "fresh" in their minds!

I don't really get why these ports are disabled by default... Is it just money-making racket? Or is it a Blaupunkt thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,657 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

The USB Box definitely needs the CD changer port activated (well, on Citroens anyway). Maybe this might require the Aux port to be activated as well - I'm not sure. Here's a look at the Quadlock:
    1249899644_82_FT77931_quadlockparts.jpg
The 9706.AG is the Aux-in port BTW.

This is the back of my own stereo:
    1269866580_13079_FT19806_imag0024_.jpg
I have an Aux in port in my glovebox so have the white connector on the left. Right is for CD changer (pink wire has no function).

Your spot on Padraig it is Aux 2 thats enabled.....my mistake..:o
I enabled my own last night and it only took around 10-15 mins...I've attached a few screenshots of how to do it....:)

WetDaddy.....your screen should look like the last pic...if not then you need to get onto your local dealer again.
They should'nt charge for this mistake....

With both aux2 and cd/usb box activated you should have this screen when
    the source button is pressed...

Wow - thanks very very much for all the details, guys!

I've had AUX1 enabled by the dealer. I spoke again with them on the phone and they've told me that I have everything I need for a USB Box (they seemed quite confident about it, in fact). They said they tested it for power and everything. I'm not sure if that means they threw in a USB box temporarily or they literally just hooked up a multimeter.

Anyway, they were decent enough about it and said "Get your hands on the USB Box (Dension GW300, in my case) and if it *doesn't* work, come right into us and we'll sort you out..."

So I'm assuming that means they won't charge me to fix it. They'd better not, anyway! So ridiculous that, theoretically, I could be charged again to go back and get the second port enabled. It's such a simple process!

Any chance what they're saying is true? *Could* you hook up a Gateway 300 using only AUX1? Even with some loss of quality?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

Well, I contacted Dension directly to see what their view on things is. Very interesting what they say about not having to enable the CD Changer port and about the GW doing it *itself*, seemingly!

I've contacted them once more to see if they can tell that what I want to purchase *online* is indeed the V2 and not leftover V1 stock:

    1. I have had a dealer enable 'AUX1' (i.e. NOT the CD Changer port) on the radio. However, it would now appear that I need the CD Changer port enabled in order to use the Gateway 300. Is this correct?
    2. I have read some reports that the Gateway 300 will not display more than 8 characters ofthe song title, artist name, etc. Is this correct?
    3. What is the difference between the Gateway 300, Gateway 300 v2 and the GW300, if any?
    1. The RD4 Head units needs an enabling process for its CD-C port, but you don't need to care about it, because the Gateway device do this process itself.
    2. The Gateways display 8 character as default but if the title of the song, artist etc. is longer than 8 character than it will scroll on the display and the whole titles can be read.
    3. Gateway 300 V1 was our old device, woth lots of limitation. (text, compatibility etc.). But currently there are only Gateway 300 V2 devices on the market. (gateway was mentioned shortly as GW, it means the same.)
If you want to buy a Gateway 300 you can purchase only the new compatible and text capable device.

Hi people i know this is an old post but cant find the answer any where. just wondered if you had any luck with the gate way 300 on your rd4. did the unit enable the aux 2 automatically or did you have to get it enabled. i currently have an rd4 with aux 1 enabled as it has the bluetooth option on it which goes into aux 1 . i dont mind losing this bluetooth if i can plug the box in to input 1 but even better if the unit enables aux 2 itself just wondered how you got on with it all mate cheers.

sorry if this has already been covered or posted in the wrong section.

thanks for your help in advance

    Hi rosspj15,

I haven't purchased the GW300 yet, but I still plan too! Probably in the next month or so... As soon as I do, I'll post here and let you know.

What bluetooth option did you go for? Also, what phone do you use it with and how do you find it works over all?

    Cheers! :)

hi there mate thanks for the reply if you could let me know that would be great.

i have the factory fitted option from peugeot on the rd4 and use a nokia phone with it. it works really well and dispalys phone book and call list. it looks exactly the same as the gw5 from the screen shoots i have seen so tempted to get that as i can retain the phone function which the dealer told me i would lose if i fitted the gw3 to my car. or though cant see how if the radio has two aux ports at the back.

i have pinged an email to dension asking the same as you about enabling the port as i read on another forum that the gw5 runs a diagnostic on the car and tells it the cd changer is present so am guessing the gw 300 will be the same.

done loads of research as i want to get the gw300 if i can retain my bt in the car. just dont want the added cost of a dealer getting involved if i have to get the port enabled.

but if the gw300 will not let me retain the factory bt it will have to be the 5.

    Ron.

Incl. delivery, it was €197 for the unit and the iPod cable. Best price I could find online. Enabling of AUX1 in dealer was ~€60, IIRC. However, that may not have been necessary!

Cheers for the mention of the Dublin-based Planet owner. I may contact you if I have screwed everything up ;)

    Hi
Wonder if anyone can help before I pull out the last of my hair !!

    I have a Peugeot 407 year 2007 with RD4 radio.
The bluetooth worked fine for a year.
I then turned off bluetooth on my phone while in the car (to save the battery) the display showed no phone connected and since I am unable pair any phone to it.
I brought it back to the dealer (twice) and they said I need a new bluetooth unit .... and it will cost 440 euro !!
Anyone any ideas how to tease this thing back to work.

    Derek
