Anyone on here using the Gigapan hardware or software at the moment? I just took delivery of a Gigapan Epic Pro and itching to get started with it, just wondering if anyone else has any tips or advice? ;)

    Wow!
I've seen some of the work that can be produced by those, and the results are fantastic!
Doubt there's too many of those in Ireland.
I eagerly await some of your examples!

    :)

i have a manfrotto 303sph system, which is similar but manual

the trick is a very solid tripods for starters

and getting the nodal point right makes a huge diff if you do it accuratley

have a look on red door vr site for tutorials etc

Cheers Steve, I used one of those Manfrotto pano heads before and found it terrible. Not enough travel to accommodate the lens and body combo I was using, also the way it is designed is terrible, takes up so much room and the detent stops are very soft so you are never sure if you are taking the shot from the right point or not.

did it cost much - I was tempted to purchase a few months ago (dont have much use for it - but I'm a stickler for gadgets) ...anyway - lost interest after I couldnt find prices....granted I didnt search much.

PC - cost under €700, mind you I had someone over in the states who could bring it over for me.

I will tell you one thing, the Gigapan itself is fine to use but the software side of things is a whole different story. The software they give you is useless for doing 360 degree stuff, so I have reverted back to old reliable PTGUI for that. I did a job with this today, just uploading the results now. Another thing I have learned, flickr's 20mb image limit is a pain if you are trying to upload panos! :)

OK here's the first samples - most of them are 360 degree panoramas done with a spherical projection (360x180 degrees) stitched in PTGUI and then post processed in CS5. Original input images shot with a Nikon D700 and either a Nikon 24mm tilt shift lens or a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 HSM lens. (The tilt shift lens is a bit too long so you can't tilt the Gigapan all the way back to get the zenith shot at the top of the panorama.)

Click on the images below to get the full size images in flickr, I have downsized them all to a maximum of 3,000 pixels tall - they were waaaaay bigger than this!

Overall conclusion - the Gigapan is a pleasure to use. If you are into this kind of stuff then consider investing, but bear in mind you will need to spend a good bit of time tinkering with your workflow to get the best out of the input images.

Also, can I have a job where you work, I presume you are up to some sort of world domination with your spikey death chamber?

I'm very jealous of the access to an anechoic chamber...
