There are Americans, and then there are Americans:

Government resting upon the will and universal suffrage of the people has no anchorage except in the people's intelligence.

Maybe it's your hygiene, and that you are the problem, not everyone else.

Girl had dreadlocks and doesnt like americans. Obvious hippy with antiwar tendencies. Hygeine would not be an issue...Except for her unwashed hair.

ok so it was in Copper face Jacks, my 2nd time there, just went in because eveyrone had gone home and it was on my route home. stayed for 30mins. she had what looked like a few dreadlocks in her hair, or maybe it was matted because she hasnt been washing it properly.

anyway Im standing in the smoking section ready to go home and she puts both her hands on my shoulders and asks me for a smoke. I tell her I dont smoke, she asks someone else. anyway I try to start up a conversation because she seems to be on her own too, she said her friends had all left.

turns out she was an asshole. I wasnt even trying to chat her up

Ha ha - somebody couldn't get laid in Coppers!!! There is no hope for you!

I've been told i'm from Wicklow, Cork, Limerick and Galway by Irish people.

I'm from Dublin. Some people are just tone deaf.

How the hell does an Irish person get mistaken for being American?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,813 ✭✭✭TPD

Irish woman in an off-license here sold our American friend drink when he was 16, and gave him her number too. Methinks she was fond of Americans.

Why were you in Coppers on your own?

You were obviously looking to get your hole. Methinks dreadlocked lady just gave you a more original rejection.

The guy went into coppers on his own to try get his hole.
I think it's fair to say that it may also be possible that he put on a fake accent as a pulling technique.

not every guy goes out looking to 'get his hole'

I only went in 'for the laugh', its halfway between the pub I was in and the place I live in. my mate went home to bed and I had downed a bottle of buckfast so wasnt ready for bed yet.

I could only last 30mins in the place, they actually played marc mc cabes maniac 2000, that was the straw that broke the camels back

So anyone that argues with your rather one track minded comment, is sensitive? Get off your high horse.

which thread are you reading, the one on your computer screen or the one in your imagination?

Not at all, I made an assumption and stated it, whether it's wrong or right in relation to the OP I have no idea, but it's still my opinion. You didn't argue with me, you made a glib remark about women that go to Coppers. In fairness if the OP was a woman I'd still have made the same assumption.

IME people don't go into Coppers alone for just the ambiance. If that means I'm on a high horse then so be it.

Well you got a bit annoyed over a woman telling you she didn't like Americans when you were trying to talk to her. You're not American, so what's the problem? Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me tbh.

wait now, 'a bit annoyed' is an 'overreaction'?
first off Im not American, Im Irish, Im also a fluent Irish speaker. secondly a person who does not like a another person because of that persons nationality is ignorant.
I was annoyed at the fact that someone would not talk to me because they thought I was from America, it seemed strange. she was rude

I just wanted to hear if anyone else ever gets mistaken for being from another country, instead I get told Im a loser. people are awesome

Maybe she just wanted to let you know that she didn't like Americans.

Perfect way to start a conversation imo...

    Wonderful ice breaker.

Or, indeed, a colossal ice former.

To be fair I never called you a loser, just overly sensitive. Actually I don't think anyone called you a loser. And for what it's worth I agree that this girl was very rude and that being judged by your accent alone is ignorant.

It's not a big deal though, honestly. If people are going to make snap judgments about you just because of your accent then they're probably not worth your time anyway. Brush it off like most people do when they encounter rude idiots on a night out and carry on.

I've never been mistaken for someone from a different country, but then I sound like I'm from Dublin. I did get told to "go **** myself" by a man outside a club last night just because I refused (politely, mind) his random offer of a cigarette. It's a shame obviously, but it happens all the time and there are mean people everywhere.

I've lived here most my life but have a bit of an American accent. I am American and my mother has a very strong accent. People just knowing or thinking your American here sometimes results in getting crap over it.
