    i picked media,spanish and anthropology for my first year and found anthro quite enjoyable. i am a complete beginner in spanish but nuim caters for beginners and we got extra hours to polish the spanish to the level of intermediate students.
    anthropology, for most of the modules and presentations was just nice. i am dropping it because apparently it is getting little heavy in second year.
    you probably will love friday morning classes in kairos studios, the theory is heavish but do-able if you follow your notes.

    I can sell you the economics book if you want :) I never used it so it's practically brand new. I didn't need it at all cos I did economics for leaving cert, if you haven't done it before you might need. It's only used for first semester though so if you can do without it I probably wouldn't bother getting it

    I'm thinking about doing this course, but I was wondering if there is much Maths involved?

    I am not sure whether to do Honours or Ordinary Maths for Leaving Cert.

    Would I be at a disadvantage if i did Ordinary Maths?

    And one more question, this year it was 350 points to get in, do you see it rising in the next two years?

    To put it differently, you'll be at an advantage if you do honours maths.

    In first year you do 4 modules; Differential Calculus, Linear Algebra 1, Integral Calculus, Data Analysis.

    In second year you do 2; Calculus 3 and Linear Algebra 2.

    In final year a lot of topics can involve maths, machine learning, signal processing etc...

    As far as points, as with any other course they could go anyway. Don't aim just to hit 350, aim much much higher for you own sake.

    Would agree with mp3guy that you would be at an advantage if you do honours maths but its the case the other subjects you are studying will suffer because of it and thus get less points in the LC then drop down. Like a lot of people from my year did OL Maths for the LC.

    There is zero Maths in Machine Learning just learning off formulas as for Signal Processing it looks a lot harder then it actually is. But you will need the Maths for such modules as Graphics (take a Maths formula that describes a spring and program it so that your object moves like it was attached to a spring was one of our assignments, pretty cool stuff I must admit), Robotics and Cryptography in 4th year thats if they havent changed it by then.

    Pretty impossible to tell, like take this for example the minimum for my year was 315 while my mates course in DIT was 400+ and now that has dropped to 320. Sure for the year below me the points were only 310 and the next year was 350.

    Like mp3guy said just aim high and hope for the best.

    Also when I was in 5th year I wasnt thinking one bit about college it was only around the time of doing my UCAS and CAO that I actually started thinking about college.

    As someone who did ordinary math (not by my own choice I must admit), its not too big of a problem, There is help in the university for those having trouble with the Mathematics modules (a support centre) and finding a good explanation of what's going on isn't too hard.

    Just keep you head in the books and your aim towards the sky in the mean time.

    I'm going to biased here but personally I love Law. You do need the dedication to concentrate on it though! It can be tough!

    k4t is probably better to talk to as i'm pretty sure he did English, Economics and Law last year!

    What subjects are you hoping to keep on in 2nd year?

    I've done both law(not in maynooth) and economics

    Don't bother choosing law if you plan on dropping it as it's a lot more work than it's worth if you only do one year. Law is also incredibly boring.

    I didn't do economics before coming to Maynooth and got in grand, they start from scratch so as long as you pay attention/do the work you'll do just as well as the LC students. If you're doing business as well then economics would be a good pairing. Only thing I would say is that the maths can be a take a bit of getting used to if you're not too strong in maths, especially in 2nd year and onwards.

    With First year English there are two classes! So you will either be in A or B! Thats why there are so many slots for it! :)
    You'll know which slots are yours when you get your personalised timetable! :)

    EDIT: By the looks of it, it may even be 3 classes this year!

    I stumbled through this course on this thread but there hasn't been much discussion about it. I'm currently completing my BA in UCC and am contemplating this. Have any Boardsies completed this course? I'm thinking about doing it as it's something I'd be hugely interested in. Is it reccommended? Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Heya Cillian, third year media student here! Good choice with Media, hope you're liking it after a week! It's a fun course, the practical stuff is all a good lot of fun! Have they pressed a camera into your hand yet? It's a great chance to be creative and work with everyone.. although they really don't tell you enough about the camera or the editing programmes. The theory in first and second year is all very dry.. they seem to keep the most interesting tidbits for third year!

    Also, I did a year abroad too, last year! I did my Erasmus year in Germany. It's definitely worth doing, but it's not so great coming back to third year and being in a new Media class and watching all your friends from first year and second year graduating without you!

    Hey just wondering if anyone can help me. I'm in First Year doing Music Technology and I have to do two Arts subjects along with it. What I want to know is do I need to pass both my Arts subjects at the end of the year even if I'm dropping one of them? I can't find anything about it on the nuim webpage.

    You need to pass everything if you're going to go on to second year.

    However, depending on the department and by how much you fail,they may allow you to continue to 2nd year if you are not taking that subject. It's entirely at their discretion. If you do fail a subject and wish to take it in to second year you'll have to sit and pass the repeat exams.

    Is anyone on here doing Latin or Greek? I'm really struggling with Maths and I'm considering picking one of these up for the year instead and was just wondering if they're very difficult subjects to pick up?

    I was also thinking of French too but I wasn't the best at it in school, so I doubt I'd be up to standard to pick it up. Any suggestions?

    I'm a first year arts student doing English, history and sociology. I've been thinking of dropping sociology for medieval Irish studies. It's just not for me, and I love history.

    The deadline for changing is on friday, what do you reckon? Will I have missed too much?

    wow haha, i just posted in the general chat thread about changing from medievel irish studies to sociology, and i might do it tomorrow. From studying the medieval irish i can say that we have now been given two essays to do and both are 1500 words ( one for the early irish literature and another essay for the other module which deals with early irish law).

    What i can say for catching up is, for the essay on literature about 80% of the class will most likely be doing the battle of moytura, which is up on moodle right now for the SG module. It is a hard enough story to read which contains lots of different characters and it written in a very backwards way ( for lack of better words), and is basically based around a battle (duh lol :)) between the tuatha de dannan and the fomorians, a type of good vs evil battle. The texts of early irish history are based on several cycles, the battle of moytura being part of the mythological cycle which is what we mostly focus on in this module (for example fionn mcool is part of the fenian cycle)

    As for the other module, you will have to do a good bit of reading to get an insight into the legal texts of medieval ireland. Basically it revovles around the role of kings who have the top job down to the unfree peoples or slaves and everybody in between such as poets and tentants etc. This part is kind of confusing because there is honour prices for each rank in society, men are treated better than women, children dont have legal status etc.

    Other than that the course is thought in english, although you will learn some bits of old irish which is cool and in respect to history it is kind of earlier than the 1600s (which we are currently studying) but i have heard the history lecturer speak of certain things i learned in the medieval irish lectures which helps to understand gaelic ireland.

    The lecturer is very nice also and im sure will give you notes or something if you ask her, but she puts everything up on moodle.

    Can you tell me a bit about sociology and maybe why your leaving it?? I am leaving medieval irish because i just thing it wont have much of an impact on what i want to do after college and i feel i wont be taking it into second year so at least i would have a choice between history and sociology then (to go with geography).

    I'm changing from sociology because it's just not for me. It all seems a bit wishy-washy the way they view things. Just my two cents, I know others will disagree.

    Hi,
    I'm planning on doing Finance and Economics. I never done either before, but I do need them for my planned career (Not that I will actually be using finance or economics).
    Anyway I was looking for some advice on how interesting it is?
    I am only doing ordinary maths and I think that I will only get a B or C.
    Is there much maths involved. I'm fine with numbers (like doing tax in business) just don't really like maths much, I find it kinda boring.

    So any info on the course would be great.

    First year doesn't have much math, it's kind of simple if you can only remember the formulas.

    Second year, which I am doing, is a bit tougher, a bit of algebra and stuff. But if you can explain things in words, lecturers are normally OK with it.

    Algebra and differentiatian are the only maths you'll be concerned with but I'm pretty sure we do more in 3rd year. If you're in any way serious of a career in economics or finance though you'll need a decent understanding of the maths.

    Im not in any way interested in a career in economics of finance. This is the only degree course that will allow me to teach both business and Geography in secondary schools.
