Exported raw files are tiny jpegs

    Hi
    Apologies in advance if this sounds like a silly question, but I have a number of RAW files, their size is approx 10,000 KB, that I have exported as jpegs. The jpegs are only 2000KB in size and I was really hoping that they would be bigger!
    Am I stuck with small Jpegs?

    To give an exact answer we'd need to know the model of camera, the software you used to convert the RAWS and the settings in the software.

    Your figures don't sound too far off.

    Its a Canon 7D and I have tried Adobe bridge/CS4 by opening in Camera Raw and saving as largest file possible.
    I have lightroom too but am not sure what to set it to?

    I'm more familiar with lightroom, have a look at this,

    File settings and image resizing are the important ones, you can fiddle with the resolution but it shouldn't make any difference

    depends on whats in the image, 2mb isnt unheard of small, maybe a little bit small but certainly pretty high quality, raws have alot of info that is cut on when converting to jpeg...ALOT

    If the raw image is 10 megabytes, a JPG being 2 megabytes is just fine.
    A JPG has lower bit-depth than a raw file, usually by 4 bits per pixel, so that's about 1/3 of the image size gone, then JPEG compression at normal levels would account for the rest easily.
    Some tweaking in the "quality" settings while saving a jpeg could get that size a lot lower. (but you would see degradation in the quality of the image for sure.)

    10MB raw file sounds like about a 6 megapixel image at 12-bit color depth.

    Sarah, it sounds like you are shooting using a reduced raw file size. The 7D is 18 megapixel, the full size raw should be around 20 megabytes. You can select file formats in the menu. Apologies if you know this already :)
