It's blocked for a reason, pity they can't have a separate connection that isn't so restricted.

The network is policed to keep with HEANET policies and ensure the networks use for academic purposes. (Can't complain, they do get the internet connection to the campus for free...)

Not every machine is locked down as tight (For example machines in the CS department network are treated differently to say a laptop on NUIM wireless).
If you know the right people and how to do it, then you can easily side step some of the more heavy handed network restrictions. (You usually need a good reason too, bit torrent or playing xbox live aren't really good reasons)

My only issue with UPC.ie so far is my problems using Vuze!

UPC free call number is 1908

Banquo, I'm just moving into an area of Maynooth where I can't get UPC. Can you give me an idea of the average speed I can attain with Eircom's fastest package? Or is there anyone better I can use? Thanks.

Eircom's fastest ADSL package is 7.6Mb/s but if you're on an ADSL2 line you can get up to 14Mb/s AFAIK.

3g is fine for most regular users, it is broadband and much faster than dial although depending on your location you may have a great connection or indeed run into connections problems.

You can actually test o2 mobile broadband for free for three days to see if it's suitable for you and what kind of connection you can get in your area. You just go up to the shop with a deposit of 75euro and then you can test out the connection for yourself. It really does depend on your location though whether the connection you'll get is any good.

I'm using Three's 3g service right now, actually runs out today and that's why I'm here, reading this thread.

The offer from o2 with 10euro/month is a pretty good deal for some people though.

Realize this thread is a bit old but still....

Anyone know whats the best internet for Beaufield ? Apparently upc isnt available and I don't want to be stuck with a 12 mnth contract either!! :S

I thought it was only some parts of Kingsbry that UPC wasn't available in? I'm not sure if they still do the 9 month contract actually.

I recently moved into an apartment building and called them up, only to discover that UPC is available everywhere else on the street, but not our building.

I went with magnet over eircom, and they aren't so bad, they have a service in Maynooth called "Magnet Stream", 12 Megabits per second (advertised, effective 10Megabits) and no monthly download limit.

    Also, old thread is old.

It is a very old tread but I tried starting a new thread, to no avail hence I decided to give this one CPR and bring it back to life :P

Someone bumped a 12 year old thread on another one of the forums the other day so I think this one is fine :p The info is still relevant - usually zombie threads are locked if they're no longer of use.

UPC would be your best bet if you can get it, i havent had wimax but yeah it is slower than UPC anyway i think. i wouldnt really know much about it to give advice so id say ur best bet is to contact the maynooth suppliers and ask them about all the ins and outs of it. hope this helps

Stay away from Imagine Wimax. Had it. Customer service is a nightmare and I wouldn't call it broadband either. A good 3g service is as good.

Where/when were you living when you had WiMax ?

I was living in Kingsbry. For the cooling off period everything was fine and dandy. But then they started throttling the life out of bit torrent downloads and the like. he ping times were dreadful aswell and never got anywhere near the 15mg package either. This happend consistently until I killed the direct debit and ripped their antenna off my house.

Right that's them off the list then so.... :P

does anyone kinow anything about the following isp's in Maynooth :

    Magnet
    Digiweb
    Clearwire
    Vodafone(not the mobile one)
    Eircom:rolleyes:

There's 6 of us in the house and it'd mainly be used for browsing/checking emails but also with x-box live to watch tv/movies on sky go and download music on occasion

    Hi!!

I tried getting magnet as well. Depends on where you live. They pretty much only offer what they can give you on the eircom lines in Maynooth anyway. They have hardly any fibre rolled out in the town. I ask them for a package and it was 5mg at something like 55 per month with serious caps on it.

Digiweb are looking good for me at the moment. Will be giving them a go in the next couple of weeks. I'm just hoping they don't throttle P2P connections or bit torrent traffic.......

Ways around that but it's a pain.

Vodafone fixed line use Eircoms infratructure obviously. However their packages don't have the same caps or restrictions as Eircom.

If you want fixed line Vodafone are your man.

    Sorry,

Just read the part about 6 of you's in the house.....

Fixed line would be your best bet. I'm not sure what Ping times are like with digi web. If there high, your online gaming is in trouble.
