I can't help you, but I am intrigued to know why you need whole trees or fallen branches to collect seed pods? Just being nosey really

the pods that fall to the ground tend to get damp, mouldy and are unusuable- you therefore need them off the tree or at least of the ground. therfore whole trees or fallen limbs is the only way to collect enough.
