Those 'power lines' on the road?

What are those lines that cross the road you see from time to time? They always come in pairs, about a foot apart and I think they go into a small box? I take it, it's to measure traffic volume or something?

traffic counters/average speed checkers etc etc
used in the city centre to monitir traffic through specific junctions or roads.

can also be used for planning applications on high profile roads to show average traffic numbers/speed.

a friend had to recently lay these down for a week on the road outside the bit of land they are planning to build on, the report neded to be submitted with the planning application.

Lay Lines...they all connect to the Hill of Tara and Newgrange.
