I think so too, whenever I started posting I remember most people were talking about school, I think theres more college posting now? Maybe I just only paid attention to the school related stuff back then!

Quite a lot, actually. Most posters here are 15 up.

No, most regulars here are 18/19 up and in college at this point. It's become more like Colleges and Hangovers than Clearasil and Hormones at this point!

    But [latex]People_{\geq15} \subset People_{\geq18/19}[/latex] tbh, so he's right

Nah aww, I'm pretty sure the amount of posters under 18 is equal/higher to those 18 and over.

Have a wee lil bit of feedback, guys, and I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular and y'know, I'm a prime culprit myself... but... I think 'cause so many of the regulars here know each other so well that it's kinda difficult for noobz to feel included.

Sometimes I read threads and posts of people who don't post here very often can be ignored a bit and Iunno. Just thought I'd bring it up, 'cause a while ago in the Ladies Lounge we had a feedback thread and so many people came out and said they were scared to post 'cause it was a bit intimidating. It'd suck for people to feel similar towards C&H 'cause everyone really is lovely.

Yeah I notice this sometimes. A lot of you of you do seem to know each in real life which can make it a bit daunting sometimes when posting. However that can't really be helped, people are obviously gonna pay more atention to posts from people they know. But I guess keeping the n00bz in mind now and then could definitely help!

But that said, everyone here really does make a massive effort to include n00bz and make everyone feel welcome, more than other board/forum I've ever been on:) <3 C&Hers:D

    Example.
Ok, so as I'm just laying in my bed looking through my NUIG prospectus, I actually just thought about the college and all the lectures i was at and stuff. And as amazing as it was, I don't think I'm quite ready to go to college, prepare for it or anything like that. I know it's like a year away but a year does fly and I feel really young :/ and a year out isn't really a choice.

And I'm scared I'll make the wrong course choice and end up hating myself for it. God! frown.gif it's 3 in the morning though so maybe i'm just overthinking this.

Don't worry. You have a lot of options. If you don't know what you want to do or even have a bland idea of what sort of area you want to be in, do a PLC.

Heck, do a PLC in something crazy that you never thought would be an option. Explore every option and take every chance that's laid in front of you.
    ^^^^^ Didn't get noticed, posted 1st.

If you want something at the time, it's not the wrong choice. Okay, maybe a year later, it will be but that's alright. You can drop outta college, you can start over, you can transfer. Don't ever be scared of making wrong decisions... 'cause that's kinda how you know in the end that the right really is right.
And you won't hate yourself. S'gonna be fine. smile.gif

I agree with what Novella is saying but I just wanted to add that we were ALL n00bs once. I only started posting in C&H in February of this year, knowing no one at all on this forum but I found everyone very accomodating and look, I'm one of the "in" crowd now (in respect that I know a lot of C&Hers IRL - purely cause I've made gone to meet ups, talked to people outside of boards.ie and that sort of malarkey).

So for n00bs I say keep posting! I genuinely don't believe that anyone here ignores other users on purpose, just because they don't know their username or know them IRL or whatever. Not everyone here knows each other and consider many posters whom I've never met, to be friends of mine! Or people I can talk to, whatever :p

So IMO, I don't think anyone here excludes anyone else intentionally but it IS something we can all be more aware of :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

Oh god, yeah, no one intentionally excludes anyone! I'm just saying it can be hard to start posting in a forum where from the outside it looks like everyone's really good friends already etc.

I would say this (and it's not to pimp the channel :P) but our IRC channel is a nice way to meet some of the regular people from this forum in a quieter, less easy to be unnoticed way. :)

Tbh, sometimes IRC is really daunting. 'Cause it's used by regulars, there are a lot of in jokes and it is easy to feel left out.

I'm not having a go at anyone. I love this forum, and IRC is usually really fun, and I was made feel really welcome here but then again, I had my blog and I sorta got to know C&H-er's through that and their blogs, more than the actual forum.

It's just so important to be aware of noobz, and not let their posts become lost in a sea of regulars having a chat. That's all.

If people want to be noticed they should have an avatar and a sig first off. I'm more likely to assign posts to people by their sig/avatar that by looking a their names.

I don't really post on this forum, but I use irc irregularily enough without knowing anyone on it.

I've been on boards for a while (since 2005, and I used to post a lot more than I do nowadays!), but I only went on C+H after the LC 2010. I knew of its existence for ages, but I was always too intimidated to post, as it seemed that everybody knew everybody. I was going to post before, but I read through a thread full of 'x poster saw y poster in the arts block' etc. and I felt I would be intruding, or something similar.

After the LC, having been posting in the LC forum for a while, it was a case of 'so where should I post now'. I decided to throw a post in the 'Introduce yourself' thread, and that's how I started with C+H. I have to say as a complete noob, I have always felt accepted and welcome in this forum, from day one. Everybody is so kind and welcoming.

I remember ages ago when the idea of this forum was being put forward to the admins, and a lot of people countered the idea thinking that a forum full of teenagers would make for some painful viewing, what with text-speak and general immaturity but it's funny how the reality is that it is one of the most mature forums I have ever come across on boards. Everybody respects each others opinions and arguments are always in debate format, nice and civil! Some forum on boards are nearly unpostable as a noobie. The motors forum is a particular exam that I have nearly been intimidated to post in in the past. You'd need a crane to get on some of the high horses in that forum.

I only went on IRC for the first time a few weeks ago also, and had all the same reservations about posting there among a bunch of regulars, but had the exact same experience with posting on C+H for the first time - everybody is welcoming and accepting, etc.

Sorry for the essay - onto problem 3 of my MATH10050 problem sheet now!

    Reeeally well said *Timbuk2* :)

Whenever I stopped posting for a while, when I came back I felt the same, that all the older crowd that I'd known had stopped posting and it was a new bunch that I didn't really know (IRL or online). But I went on IRC for a few nights and everyone was so nice there that I didn't feel out of place posting on the main forum again :) Its great on nights where theres maybe around 10 people or so online, and the chat isn't going too fast.

eh,sorry to be "that guy" but isn't that the point? Half the reason people post and what makes C&H so active IS that everyone knows each other so well.it's awkward trying to break into it[I assume,I've been stinking this place up since day 1] but I think everyone on the inside can agree it's worth it.Without going into personal details this place has spawned couples/close friendships/helped people through tough times/convinced people and been a social outlet for like 2/3? years now.

But, put simply, there's no real way to make the place much different[that I can see,I'm not opposed to the idea].i only met internet people last year, but it's the same people that were posting with me through 4th year/Leaving cert so regardless of how it may come across there are a good few who have been "Friends" on boards for years now and it's human nature for that to affect how they interact

I know it's been said before but people do always pay more attention to those they know/those with sigs.I mean seriously, if I deleted my sig you wouldn't even be reading this :P.

the vast majority of in-jokes are spawned from the IRC out of boredom, so hop in and start trolling and you'll be one of the family in no time :D

Out of curiosity;Does anyone feel un-welcomed in C&H?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

I actually brought it up because a poster said to me that they found the forum "cliquey", and I figured if one person felt like that, others more than likely do too. It's kinda unfair to ask people if they feel unwelcome, 'cause no one wants to be the one saying, "Yeah, I feel left out".

Don't get me wrong, I love this forum and I always have. Sure, posting gets easier with time, but I do think noobz need to be paid more attention. That's all. I love everybody! I just don't want anyone feelin' left out. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,919 ✭✭✭Grindylow

Meh, people shouldn't expect to get noticed on their first post - some posters probably just feel more comfortable replying to regulars because they may think the other poster won't ever return to the thread anyway.

I only started posting here in May-ish and it took a while for me to actually get noticed by other posters, but I'm not really bothered about not being noticed by some of the regulars still. There are certain cliques on C&H though, and it really can't be denied. Those who are friends IRL generally talk only/more with eachother.

I meant more for the more active posters 'cos I'm too cool to talk to newbies that were on the outside and came in,did you feel un-welcomed by C&H?

It's easy for the more active posters to say that everything is grand though! When you've been accepted into a circle, and people become your friends IRL etc., it's so simple to forget what it's like to be on the outside looking in.

I'm not trying to put anyone on the defensive here! All I am saying is that sometimes in this forum, things can get a tiny bit too "Facebook-y", y'know in-jokes and this is a public forum, it's not msn with your best friend.

And I'm not saying I'm not a part of this! I'm guilty as hell for coming here and having a chat with posters who I know better. It's just the thought that I make anyone feel excluded bothers me, so I wanted to bring it up.
