I was thinking of bringing a poster tube as hand luggage but as its ryanair it most likely i won't get away with that.
So my new plan is put it in my check in bag. It will however be sticking out of said bag by about 20-30cm.
Is there a problem in doing this as I don't see anything wrong with it. Think I'll have to secure it somehow with cling film or tape as it may fall out of course.
Will I be allowed check in a bag like that?
I don't want to have to check in two pieces!

I have traveled with poster tubes to conferences before. As you say, carry-on will not work for Ryanair as the poster tube is too large. You can check it in as part of your bag. There is no requirement that the bag be the shape of a suitcase or a box... but be aware that checked luggage is subject to some rough treatment and throwing around. If you have a bag with a poster tube sticking out, chances are, it will get stuck somewhere on a conveyor belt and get broken/bent/ripped off... better take a larger bag and stick the poster tube inside it.

just to let people in a similiar situation in the future know is that I checked a bag in witht he poster sticking out:
from dublin there was no problem but i had to bring it to the oversized baggage area.
in milan the check in girl said that i should wrap it up or bring it carry on. I told her i didnt want to do either and they wouldnt allow me to carry it on anyway.
    so its no bother really

unrealated problem was on return i found that the italian baggage people had rummaged through my stuff
