Wow! I found myself just there - I remember seeing the car one morning on the way to work. The car looked like it was about to announce "Google is taking control of <YOUR TOWN>"

Why would thieves bother spending ages going around an estate on Google Streetview looking at photos of what cars people had 18 months ago, when they can drive around in 10 minutes and see what car you have ***right now***?

Cos they generally live in dumps, and this will now save them the bother of driving all the way to Malahide/Killiney/insert town here on the offchance there might be a nice car. Now they will know , that if there are 1 or 2 cars worth getting off streetmaps, they pile into a stolen sh1tter out, to your estate and rob the cars. Plus they can smoke theie spliffs while doing the searching.

Sure there is a thread in classic cars where lads are posting pics of classics outside houses  .

    Dont be naive.

There are nice cars in every town in the country. Everyone knows which of their neighbours has a nice car. And it is entirely possible that people could have sold their cars since the photos were taken...
I think you've been reading too much of the Daily Mail!

What about the estate agents who have been putting photos of people's houses in their windows for years?

It's no secret that there are some nice cars in wealthier areas. They're on public display outside people's houses, and always have been. There's nothing new here. The idea that thieves will search on google for stuff to steal is ridiculous.

Is anyone else getting really bad quality pictures? Or is it just that my computer is so bad that I can forget about actually ever using the street view until I get a better one? :(

How insular can you be. Up until today, only you and pretty much your neighbours knew who has the nice cars.

Whereas today, any car thief stealing to order can , within a few mouseclicks , save himself the hassle of roving around. Its all im saying.

But they could do exactly the same by driving or walking past my house.

I just don't think street view will lead to any increase in crime, and I don't think your run of the mill burglar or car thief will use it to decide what to steal. One should be far more worried about opportunistic thieves who might see (not on google maps ;) ) something of value left in your car.

Thieves don't live in the woods and mountains ala Robin hood or ali baba. They live in pretty much every community. Even the most exclusive community will have potential theives passing by/through it every day. So, you can be sure that the nice cars are already known to potential 'new owners'. It's not like cctv that they can check to see when the car is there or not...that would be potentially helpful for them

Thank goodness my porsche was elsewhere the day they drove around by my house :P:pac:

as funny and entertaining as it is right now its incredible just thinking that years from now people will actually be able to see what the whole country used to look like.

It looks to me as if he is holding his lot in after getting a wallop from the scummer alongside him who has taken off running.

Google plans to gather Streetview photos every three years. Older Streetview images will be kept in archive, and viewable to everyone.

Google are pouring money into facial recognition technology (see Google Goggles), and they will use these Streetview archives to identify faces and objects.

I think this is cool, but also pretty scary. They are archiving a massive amount of information from us. 10 years from now, we may have quantum computers, and that wealth of information will be extremely valuable to the powers that be.

    Yikes!
