    Hi Guys

Put my car in for its service today, poor thing is going thru the mill! Ive just been told I need new front discs & pads, front shocks & absorbers, Suspension discs & links, & a new fanbelt. Has anyone any idea how much this should cost approx? any mechanics out there? I havent a clue when it comes to the costs, and theyre ringin me back in bout an hour with a price, so I wana get a general idea before I give them the go ahead.

    Thanks for the help!

I'd say probably in the area of 2500 after labour...probably more - these places charge way way over the odds for parts normally.

If you have left it into a fastfit type outfit, I would refuse all the work pending a second opinion.
If its a mechanic you trust, well get a full price before going ahead.

What type of car is it and what year?

Surprise surprise, get any independent garage to have a look at it. It might cost you a few euro but there is a VERY strong possibility that you are being sold stuff that you dont need.
    What type of car?

Im in Dublin, and its a peugeot 206, 2002, good car ever had a days trouble with it until now, its been due its service the past couple of months but just havent had the money!....and they could be spinning me a line and I wouldnt know as I dont know much about cars unfortunately! If what they say is wrong with the car is true, dya reckon it be safe enuf t drive for a few days if I was to collect it and get quotes elsewhere?

A local indie mechanic is generally a good bet ask around between your friends/work mates and see if anyone has any recommendations, try and get the cardock place to give you a printed report on what they said was wrong too.

you dont want to get a quote from the mechanic from the report you get from cardock. give him the car and let him say what needs to be done and compare the 2

Is it due the Nct soon? If so run it through and see what it really needs..

Nobody can tell you its safe to drink via the internet. The shocks are not going to be any worse than they have been for the last while so no issue there really if you feel the car was fine to drive until now. Are your brakes making a harsh grinding noise or did you simply just book in for a service with the car being generally perfect?

The fanbelt a big issue? Nah Im nt concerned about the breaks, I knew Id need new pads but they arent making the screech / scraping noise as of yet, which they have done wen I needed them before. More concerned about the fanbelt and suspension discs

First rule of motoring.... Never spend money on pre NCT checks or repairs unless they are obvious fail items.
Did you actually ask garage to check it out for its NCT? If so Id say 95% chance of a scam here!

sounds like they are chancin their arm alrite!

You could go ahead with the fan belt tbh if you have had the car for a couple of years and not changed it. It should be small money.
Brake discs may or may not be needed and you would want to know this before sticking new pads on.
Suspension discs? Did you hear them right?

Ok thanks kildare! Ill do as advised and get the printed report and bring it elsewhere....

Back to the fanbelt thou, major issue if I dont get a new one? (lets just pretend they arent chancing their arm for a minute :) )

Im a pain I know, but when I said I knew nothing about cars I meant it! and unfortunately the men that exist in my life dont know a whole lot about them either!
