I was listening to the radio this morning and there was beggars/tappers/junkies on being interviewed in Dublin City Centre saying they make €80 a day - and then they'd get the dole also ....

    Thoughts?

In keeping with the general premise of the thread: very little.

I only give sandwiches to hungry people now if at all. 50% of the time they are totally grateful but some are bastards about it. So guess those bastards are the ones making €750 a week :D

I don't think they do get the dole. How would they provide proof of address?

    my thoughts are this:

i wonder if there is a ship big enough to take the junkies and general scum of ireland 5 miles out into the atlantic and dump them overboard...

i'm not in the humour for giving sympathy to junkies this morning at all. actually, that's most mornings...

they get homeless allowance if they don't have an address. Far easier to get than dole, and easier to swindle. Knew some people on it years ago. Was pretty shocked how easy it was for them to get it.

It's a well known fact that a large percentage of beggars in Dublin city are "professional" beggars.

    I thought everybody knew that.

I wouldn't give beggars the steam off me piss!

    Thanks!

They would probably use a bill from their Sky HD package they have set up in their 4 bedroom house that we pay for too.

    How does that work?

Isn't it possible that a homeless person wouldn't have any ID. So I'm not surprised it's so easy to swindle.

This is true. You need to watch out for the guys wearing Kurt Geiger slip-ons.

I know one of the fellas who was on that show. In fact I passed by him yesterday and was about to give him 20cent, but he abruptly stopped me and said "No thanks. I don't work on Sundays".

It's easy to find out what they earn, just check their tax returns.

On Thursday I was walking past a beggar outside of Spar in Drumcondra. I did the usual thing I do and walk past but the guy asked me what time was it. Since it's free for me to tell him the time I said 6.55. The guy got up and hailed down a bloody taxi to take him to Temple Bar.

Did it have 'Temple Bar' written on it?

Or did the beggar just have a kinda unmistakable Temple Bar-bound feel off him.

It explains why they all disappear(bar the real hardship cases) off the streets once darkness falls as they are not really homeless. Con artists is the more appropriate description.

Do you seriously think its only homeless people who beg?? I know of at least two people who own their homes and go out "tapping". It is a very lucrative business but not one I'd deliberately get into:D

750 a week... thats *does quick calculation* more than the average industrial wage!

I am sick to my teeth of getting accosted on the street. Its getting ridiculous in this country.

No I heard him say Temple Bar as he was getting into the taxi. Although he did seem speak with an english accent and looked like he'd fit in at a bachelor party.
