Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    What is the Foldathon:
In an effort to try and kick start the Folding team here at boards.ie, we'll be holding a 2 day Foldathon every month. 2 days when you forgo gaming, and fire up some Folding clients.

Pretty sure most of us will get competitive, so plenty of banter to be had, and best of all, you'll be helping research diseases. :)

    How it works:
Run Folding@home for team boards.ie (number 39432) during the specified times. If you don't know what Folding@home is, feel free to make a thread in the forum or check these guides:

    What is Folding?
    CPU Folding
    GPU Folding

    When?:

    Wednesday October 6th, 5pm until Friday October 8th, 5pm.

I'll take part in this for sure. I've never 'folded' before, but this will provide me with some much needed study-time.

I will be using my PS3 - will that be much help, or does it not contribute much?

    Yay! :D

The PS3 will get ~1.2k points a day... at the moment I've got my PS3 Folding for boards; you can see the stats here:
    http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=528532

That puts me as 4th highest producer for the team, so yeah, it will contribute quite a bit. :)

Saw this yesterday and decided to start folding again on my PS3 today. Joined the Boards team. I'll probably start doing it more regularly now that I know about the team. Bit more of a community spirit and motivation rather than do it on my own :P

I fold for TCD usually but I'll join for sure! Can you pop down to B&U forum and post a reminder beforehand as I don't often visit Distributed Computing.

    Edit: WILL THERE BE PRIZES?!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

I'll PM all sign ups the night before. ;)

And no... no prizes this time around... this month is to show the Folding section is alive. ;)

Count me in zodac, just signed up there. Amazingly, the time suits me perfectly as I'm in school on those 2 evenings and wouldn't get any time to sit down to my machine anyway. That's not to say I wouldn't join otherwise... :P :D

    Actually I wouldn't mind, I think I'll send you a PM.

I'll move over 80 cpu clients, 12 cpu clients and 2 ps3's over for the 48 hours. Should give a nice little boost ;) Will take me a bloody age to install and setup all the clients though. Also have to hope work won't mind too much.

    Very nice. :p

Setting up the clients shouldn't be too bad though. Version 6.30 of the SMP client doesn't use the MPI libraries, so no need for install.bat anymore. So make a folder with the Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe file and client.cfg (and a shortcut of the Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe with the -smp flag added) then copy it to each of your CPUs. :D

We got lovely new machines in the labs in College, packed with i7-860 goodness! Will have to give some of these a nice break-in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Yes... you definitely need to do that. I think we're gonna see a very nice PPD boost next week guys. ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,401 ✭✭✭✭Anti

Oh some i7 goodness. Most of the machines here in work are crappy quad core amd's or ****ty c2d's :( I doub't ill get much out of them, but every little helps. Is it still possible to use a - flag to disable it from showing in the taskbar? Last thing i want is someone closing it on me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Not sure about the flag, but when you configure it you can have it run as a service. Should do the same job.

Can I use my 360? It gets little enough play time and may as well make itself useful.

Also, there's an ancient pentium something or other inside, should I bother setting that up?:p

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

I don't think there's a client for the 360, only one for eight-core behemoth inside the PS3 :( Otherwise I'd be running my 360 as well as my PC!! :o

    Very efficient. ;)

Make sure you request a passkey, and then you'll need to complete 10 WUs to qualify for bonus points.

After that, you can get anywhere from 15-20k PPD just by running the SMP client. Each WU will take ~6hrs. If you're a more dedicated Folder, and you can get an overclock of at least 3.6Ghz, you can Fold -bigadv WUs. They need you to Folder ~20hrs a day and take 2-3 days to complete, but get 30-40k PPD. :)

Until a week or two ago I was using a Pentium D for non-stop Folding on my main rig. Little thing pumped out 400 PPD, and took more than 2 days per WU. :D

Yeah, I'm afraid the Xbox doesn't have a Folding client. Someone did manage to get Linux running on it and started a Folding client, but it got less than 100 PPD IIRC. Not really worth the effort.

Jebus!:o:o:o Even my C2D scores over five times faster! :o:o

Ouch! :o:o Wonder if that was solely down to the stripped-down ARM CPU or whether there was another issue going on... simple or not, a fast tricore should be pumping out more than that!:eek:

Yep... still went a year and a half Folding before I gave it a break though. This Q6600 is doing a good job of picking up the slack.

    Q6600...

    *is envious again* :(

On a Dell motherboard though, so no OCing. :(

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

    You still have 9.6GHz of Core2 grunt!! :p I only have 6.66GHz... :o

I wonder when the next Competiton will take place...? *dreams of OCd i5-760* :D:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Well , that's true. It does bring in double the PPD you get. :p

Anyway, E8400 and GTS 250 switched over to Boards. Will move the 9800GT and Q6600 as soon as this SMP WU is finished. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭ronkmonster

Which would I be better using?
i7 at 4ghz or 5970 with gpu folding?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Long term, the i7 will get you ~15k PPD (or 30-35k with -bigadv). However, for the first 10 WUs, you'll only be getting 2-3k PPD since bonus points won't have kicked in.

The 5970 will get 6-7k PPD, but will hurt SMP Folding, and takes a lot more power to run.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

I suspect that we won't be scoring very high until next time, as this time around at this point (or even several days before, for anyone without a fast i7 or X6) any newbs to folding won't have had time to start racking bonus points :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

No, I wouldn't expect a load of points this month. But if we get enough people to sign up, we can expand next month.

    Baby steps. ;)

I'm very curious to see what change in PPD we will get, though we have dropped about 9k PPD since the end of September.

Sigh, I forgot to copy down my passkey and I won't be in College til 4ish tomorrow.
