Oh is it just me or is this a relatively simple solution.

    The sun will blast us.
EMP only effects things which are currently running an electric current.

The blast can be predicted because the suns ejections are not instant. We will see it coming.

World wide announcement to shutdown all electricity supplies and generators.
No current flowing. Nothing gets popped.

Not perfect as some things just cant be shutdown but nothing as sever as taking 50 years to recover.

The storm (or indeed an EMP) induces its own current in long conductors that could potentially overload whatever is connected to them.

    Also this.

    We're doooooooooomed!

Can't we just wrap everything up in tinfoil and cling film and mayonnaise.
I'm going to be super mad if my hard-drive gets wiped.

If it is that bad, they will come up with something to stop all electronics going bust. Reminiscent of Y2K, no? Lets hope the esb are not in charge of fixing the grid:)

Ever see that film "Knowing"? - biggest pile of sh*t ever. This has to be better than it.

    Quality journalism there.

I'm getting a bit tired of all these ****ing scaremongers. It's reaching a point where a journalist will cry wolf and nobody will listen.

Just one, I believe American's use the word then instead of than, idiots.

This has always been one of the hypothetical ways in which civilisation ends - the internet and all computer data gets wiped, petrabytes of research data is lost, banking data goes....
We won't have to pay back NAMA and huge debt for the rest of our lives since we will not know how much we owe. :D Reset is always good. clean slate.

Seriously, Power Grids will fail, High Voltage Transformers will be damaged, It can take decades to replace unless we have spares around before then.

Which mean no power, i.e no mobile phones, No TV, no computers, no work to go to, No Income, No Dole, no pumps to work fuel stations, no bank machines working to give us our money, No delivery of food to Shops as all order are electronic/Faxed because all offices need power.

At Home more likely that the Circuit breakers will trip, fuses will blow, except the reliable the copper fuses connect to any equipment you working on will probally electrocute you eek.gif.

Some car/vehicles may get statistically damaged which mean the ECU/ECM may get damaged.

No you won't be extinct, you will evolve into this.

Apparently it takes 3 yrs from design to manufacture of a large city supply type electrical transformer,

i read somewhere that in the states mr Obama has provided funding over the last couple of yrs for "ground resitors" to protect the grid from being fried in the USA.

Somehow I sort of doubt our boys are doing much in the prevention side of things, but I am certain that when the **** hits the fan that Mr Cowen will be wearing a very nice tie.

Coronal mass ejections pose a more likely threat than an asteroid strike.

Yeah, coronal mass erections will definitely kill us quicker.

Wont matter, even if anything is unplugged all our fancy doodads are still going to get fried. An EMP will cause rapid changes in the magnetic field all around us. To the electronic components this will look like a massive voltage which it will try to rectify. The current generated within the components will be too large and the electronic switches will be all fused open/closed turning your device into nothing more than a ugly paperweight.

The only way (and its by no means guaranteed to work) is to stick all you electronics into those static discharge bags that you get with motherboards etc, and stick this into a larger sealed metal box to make a Faraday cage. This should then be grounded by burying it or hooking it up to some type of conductor that enters the ground like a water pipe.

Of course this will mean nothing since after you crawl out of your bunker and remove your tinfoil hat there wont be any mains electricity to power all this stuff because the electrical grid will have gone completely melty. Just remember to pack plenty of batteries or better still just connect two yogurt pots together with a piece of string and pretend to be a low rent version of Mad Max by ranting drunkenly at your wife whose on the other end.

This happens every 12-13 years, it's just media hype thats tieing in with 2012. We could get hit by a small solar storm next week for all we know. A big one is due around 2011-2014 but will it be fired in our direction is the question. The sun is a massive ball and the CME can be fired in any direction.

Canada and a major part of the US power grid was knocked out by a massive solar fare about 10 years ago. This is nothing new. It's just that we are relying on technology alot more than that last solar maximum so the effects of a direct hit from a major storm will effect more people alot more than in the past.

Yea but the thing is if we are hit by one like the carrington event in 1870 (i think) then thats it,the ones that hit canada back in 1990s were pretty tiny in comparison to the carrington one, which happens quite regularly enough every 100 odd yrs or therabouts,i read abook on this in 2006 and it hasnt left me,this is gonna happen ,no doubt about that, question is how will we cope? and why are we not putting in protection to our grids NOW? one thing losing our communications, quite another to lose our very power that runs the world!!

Speaking back in June, head of NASA's Heliospheric Division, Richard Fisher joked "The next maximum is anticipated to be somewhere around the lowest ever seen to a little bit higher than the highest that's ever been seen."

He does suggest having an emergency supply of food and water and other things needed to weather a disaster but said "There are alternate systems for providing power to hospitals, critical records and things like that. I think it'll be inconvenient, as opposed to... well not necessarily deadly for goodness' sake."

All the signs are that our nearest star is in the midst of a thoroughly normal cycle. As the sun heads toward Solar Max, you can expect the potential for disruption as well as the potential for harmless light shows.

Gotcha, space Nazis. Even when it was the Sun sending out an EMP, I knew it was the space Nazis.

Heck no. Everybody knows they're invading in 2018.

So this is how the recession ends?

Its similar to what the Cylons did in Battlestar Gallactica. They EMP'ed all the Caprica's(the human race's equivalent of Earth) defences rendering them useless and then promptly nuked the planet killing billions.

So perhaps, this upcoming sun storm is a pre-requisite to an alien invasion to wipe us out? :)

Only if you are in an aeroplane. The die-off occurs after when food production and distribution suffers.

Also, if rioting breaks out, then that would kill people too.

Again, this may not acually happen at all.

I wonder if this is what Nostradamus was referring to in one of his most famous quatrains when he predicted

"And birds will fall from the sky"

    HHMMMMMM......
