    Hi,
It looks like I need to get a new ABS control unit(ECU) - I had the ESP light constantly on and I got it get checked out. The thing is I got a Quote that seems outragious - €1500!! This included the part and 1hrs work!
I'm just wondering what the true price for this part and what I should expect to pay?

These can be repaired now as far as I know.

Have you tried asking on www.vagdrivers.net or any of the english vw forums eg: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/index.php

as Neilw said these should be suitable for repair, but where and by who is the question :P

Thanks a million - I will try those 2 sites too! I'm now looking for a second-hand ABS control unit which is proving to be difficult to find!

    hi there,

Is it the g201 sensor fault? it sounds like what i had. I have an 06 VRS petrol and the esp light stayed on. turns out a sensor in the unit went and i had same 1500 quote for the replacement unit.

Luckily i had a relative whos a mechanic to take the unit out for me. i checked ecutesting.com about 350 sterling for repair before adding postage and packaging. I came across a place in greenogue industrial estate in rathcoole called logicautomotive.ie . They repaired it by placing the sensor externally on the unit. It took a few days (guessing it was probably sent to england) but cost 576 euro inc vat.

worked a treat. just had to have it reprogrammed on VAG after put back in car. A step by step guide was given to me with the unit on how to do it(well the friend who had the VAG software). so im happy i saved a grand. so maybe you can check with them? its the best i could find anyway, hope its of use to you.

Going by the warning on the ecutesting.com website
    !!SAFETY WARNING!!
We DO NOT modify your braking system in any way or install any kind of additional wires, pipes or sensors to your ABS unit. These ABS units are highly advanced & sensitive Anti-locking Braking Systems and are vital for your own safety so should NEVER ever be modified in any way whatsoever. When we rebuild your ABS unit we do not change the design or function of your ABS Pump Module - your ABS system will be returned to you functioning and looking exactly as it was originally designed.

I'd be a bit sceptical about a fix where they are adding the sensor external to the ABS unit.

OP if you are going to ship your unit to the UK for repair, check out parcel2go.com and postagesupermarket.com for good rates.

Thanks all for your replies! Unfortunately I was not told the exact error by the garage so I can’t say if it is a G201 sensor fault. All they said to me is that I needed a new ABS control unit. I will be going back to them now for the full report....as I just took their word.

I have been onto partsgateway.co.uk and sunburn have come back to me with a quote of a 2nd hand ABS control unit for 420 sterling!
At the moment I’m in talks with a garage to find out if I could use a Golf 07 1.6 abs control unit that I would be able to get my hands on. I know VW Ireland are saying no but.....I’m not just taking their word for it....

Thanks for the heads up on the warning do-more,

I never actually copped that after I got it repaired. But after it was re fitted I had the lovely job of assisting pumping the brakes replacing the fluid. But after it was reprogrammed there is no difference to the feel or stopping power than before. It appears to be working perfectly and no faults appearing.

Another thing to note is if you own the car from new and have full main dealer history apply for goodwill on them replacing the unit or giving a percentage towards the cost eg. 50% . Its a long shot, it didnt work for me as I am second owner but it is a common problem that VW seem to be ignoring (not good for a safety feature) but others have been successful in getting reduced price. Probably still best to go with ecutesting. Best of luck with it.
