I decided to pick Biology and chemistry for 2 of my modules today, despite having only done physics for the leaving cert.In all honesty how screwed am I?I'm thinking already maybe of switching the chemistry..

If you were to switch I'd advise dropping the biology for physics. Biology is ok, but it's got lots of terms and concepts to learn that were covered at Leaving cert that you'd need to catch up on.

Chemistry starts from basics but moves fast however it would also suit physics as the first module is physical chemistry and easier to do well in than biology if you put the work in. If you are looking to transfer go to the course office.

Any other questions don't hesitate to send a PM.

Thanks for replying.I've really set my heart on zoology so I need to biology definitely. I'm just worried that I won't be able to keep up with 2 completely new subjects.

Have you considered something like Geography then? It's a pretty interesting subject and apparently very easy to pick up. If you still have the common first year timetable you could attend a lecture for any of the subjects you like and then go back to the course office and get advice for changing. Alternatively you can mention this to your tutor and they'll help you with these kind of queries later in the week.

yeh, I might switch to something like that, the adviser said I could switch the chemistry for semester 2 if I needed too.Hopefully it will all work out :)

You'd might be able to switch out of the first chem module too..my mate did three weeks into lectures..depends what you switch to though..

But, I think you'll be grand..the biology is very 'in head first' I agree but if you like it you shouldn't have a problem with the workload. Good luck either way :D

I thought the lecturers today were brillant! Decided on Biology, Chemistry, Maths Methods and the second semester of Geography so looking forward to starting now :)

Missed the module registration today for various reasons, anyone know where exactly I can go to do it tomorrow or will I just give them a ring in the morning?

You should head to the Science Course Office in the Hamilton building tomorrow, they'll sort you out.

Eh, overslept and missed the course meeting >_< Whoops - did I miss much?

Chose Biology, Chemistry and Maths for my modules.

    \o/

Did you actually register your choices, yeah?

If you did, then you didn't miss much. It was basically a lecturer from each of the classes talking about it. So someone from bio, chem etc. gave a talk about the subject and they went over the combinations we could choose from.

Ah grand so. Yea, I registered them - I've known I wanted to do that combo for months and I knew people who filled me in on the subjects so I was probably alright missing that meeting thing :P

You'll be fine, just put the work in. Because it's relatively maths light (not so many abstract concepts) it's apparently the easiest of the three to pick up from scratch. i.e. a foundation in biology is less important than a foundation in chemistry, physics or maths (in increasing order) to succeed in that subject. I'm in no way commenting on the shear amount of work involved in the subject. Just because it's less complicated to pick up from scratch, doesn't mean it's any less difficult to master.

Biology would certainly be easier to pick up but the sheer volume of work meant that while I've never failed a Chemistry exam I've failed my fair share of Biology ones.:p

It's been a very long while since I've been up so early and I'm exhausted now! Picked Chemistry, Biology and Maths.

Did anyone else experience a moment where they looked around the room thinking, 'I wonder who here is a boardsie...'? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 112 ✭✭Aoiferz

Picked Maths, Physics, Geology and one semester of Chemistry :D

Yeah, and I'm very tempted to ask people but that'd be weird.

There were so many people, I didn't even want to :P

I picked maths, physics & chem.

In my drunkeness I appear to have left that yellow book they gave us in the porterhouse (in the off chance someone should find it and be thinking how did this get here).
Anything important in it other than the timetable or can I go without it?

They have loads in the science course office. Get another one next time you're there. Don't think there's anything important though.

I'm assuming there's no labs in the first week for 2nd years?

You do one lab session per week per module, i.e. 3 hours. Labs are assigned so you dont know which of these labs (A, B, C...) that you'll be in untill you get your online timetable.

Aside, timetable is rough next year. half way through semester one I get a lovely 10-5 no break and have a lovely big 6 hour gap on a Wednesday.

When do we get our focking online timetables? :pac:

Ah right. When you register you'll get a password which you can use on that site, myzone.tcd.ie for email and also for logging onto the computers. They're a bit awkward though, you'll have to register on each one using the username and password you're given.
