I think this is a possibility as it was a disgrace what happened regarding his morning show interview and think-in in Galway.

I'd say zero chance, Brian Lenihan has enough on his plate with pancreatic cancer.

Nobody will want the job until after the next budget and Fianna Gael will not want an election this year, tis a poisoned chalice.

No, he's too f&cking stupid to resign, and everyone else is too smart (not smart as in intelligent, more like self-preservation smart) to take over.

The ship will continue to sink, it does not matter who is at the wheel.

Not a hope. A challenge now for leadership would topple the government and no FF'er will want that.

So if the government were to be re-elected would that mean that Fine Gale or the Labour Party might be in with a chance of running the country so? Gilmore might be a good candidate to become the next Taoiseach?

if he resigns/is replaced it wont be until the next GE is announced.

nobody in their right mind wants the job at the moment but the party wont allow BC to lead them into the next election - that would be party political suicide (not some spotty teenage attempt at suicide like they seem to be engaging in at the moment)

How is Brian Lenihan's health now? Haven't really heard much about is since the story orginally broke (which hopefully is a good sign).

Gilmore will never be Taoiseach, Tanaiste possibly.

People who want a resignation over what may have been a hang over are pathetic. If he's going to resign, I'd want it to be for a good enough reason and not some pseudo-political bullshit.

Zero chance. Sure, you'd want to be a bit mad to take over that job. Who would want it at the moment.

The two Brians doing a press conference in a few mins. Probably to rubbish all this talk.

    Will RTE have it live?

I think the smart thing to do would be to just carry on, and then when the election comes run the election saying that Brian Lenihan will take over the party after the election, and therefore will be Taoiseach if Fianna Fail remain in power. Also, I completely agree with Sheeps' post:

French fella I used to live with went mental when Bertie appointed Cowan to lead the country.
Just couldn't believe that we would let a political party pick the person to run the country rather than the people.

    Can't see it happening again.

The French have a different system. Our system is that the leader of the party in power is Taoiseach. We don't, and have never, elected our Taoiseach directly. When you vote for a party, you do so knowing that whoever they decide to be their party leader will be Taoiseach (assuming they win).

    some chance of that happening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,165 ✭✭✭enda1

I think it would be quite undemocratic for another Taoiseach to come into power not having lead a party into election success.

Cowen should step down and call a general election. though he should wait till after the budget is voted in.

I don't think anyone, in any party, would want a General Election this side of the budget.

Cannot see him stepping down whatsoever

I am not trying to be cynical here when I say this, but putting a 'dying' Lenihan into this position could be a huge vote getter for FF if the Elections are timed correctly.

Growing up in the 'Democratic Machine' of the Southside of Chicago, the dying candidate/close relative is a HUGE vote swing apparatus when played correctly. I have seen candidates 'pull the plug' on relative the day before elections. I have also seen dead candidates defeat the living.

If this switch does happen, I completely expect it to be for the reasons stated above.
