I think you might be best off getting a physio to check it out, just to be on the safe side.

    +1
There are a whole load of things it could be, and insoles won't help with most of them.

Sorry no can do, I'll be rubbing sudocream onto my nipples and between my legs at that stage:D

I think you might be best off getting a physio to check it out, just to be on the safe side. If they're necessary, you may be recommended orthotics, and you'll probably be given some strengthening exercises to do anyway.

Ok I better do bite the bullet an just see a physio.

It just makes me feel uneasy that I am someone willing to pay for a physio. Like I might be getting illusions of being an athlete!!

But its going on too long so I best just do it or Ill never get back to running.

Hi everyone, its been a while since I posted here. :p
Used to be here every day for a while!

Firstly, best of luck to everyone in their first (or subsequent) HM this weekend! I know you will all be great and push me to the slowest "ran" HM of the year position on here!:D

Anyway, as some of you may know I hurt my knee after my half on last weekend in August (almost 3 weeks ago) and its still not 100% :(:(:(

I am really missing the exercise tbh and I really want to get back into it.

I have researched knee pain and I think mine was more than likely caused by running on an uneven road surface the weekend before my HM. Also I may be using bad running technique. Running the race just worsened the problem. And despite resting it almost entirely for three weeks ( i went for a couple of walks), its still pulling just under my left knee (on inside of leg).

Would anyone recommend getting sports insoles to help with this/prevent it happening again, or does a physio have to recommend them? Ive ssen them in the chemist, so I just buy a standard pair?
Come err yungwan (sorry couldn't resist)

Have you been properly measured up (gait analysis) for your runners, I had similar problems to you and tried loads of things to sort it out in the end properly fitting runners and leg strengthening exercises seemed to do the trick.

I you run this without a number there'll be plenty of people shouting abuse at you alright. However I'm not sure any of it will be encouraging.

this is the final warning. Next person to comment on race number changes gets a ban.

a148pro. please read the charter. neither race swap and personal abuse are tolerated around here.

Guys - a quick qn - did my last v short (2m) this evening before Saturday - when I run i get really hot. In a fit of hope that the summer would last forever I bought shorts a few weeks ago to run in (I wore capri shorts for the 10m and thought I would die from the heat)...other than when I run I am the worlds most cold blooded person - how do I stay warm enough before the race but not melt during the race:confused:...am thinking of taking a really old top and trackie bottoms with me and taking them off just before the start leaving them on my bike for the race and if they are there when i get back they are...and if they are gone they are gone...any better ideas? Am I missing the bloody obvious?

    Hi Yungwan

sorry to hear about your knee..agree with the earlier posts if you talk to a good physio they should be able to help..the sooner you bite the bullet the sooner you are back running..Thanks for the good wishes for Saturday! Nervous!!!

Can somebody suggest where I can park my car on Saturday near'ish to the Pheonix park for the half marathon, I'm driving from the south east direction up to Dublin.

I'm mindful of the say 8k people doing the HM so I'm worried where I might be able to park the car

At the Frank Duffy 10mile race the had a car park just inside the Ashtown gate and as far as I know there was one near the Zoo also

I'm pretty sure the zoo car park doesn't open until 10 am. I went to the zoo a while back with the kids, getting there early, and the barrier was down. I've no idea why they put a barrier there at all...

That sounds like a good plan. There's also a baggage drop, but I think the queues are pretty long for that. Wearing dumpable clothes means you can keep them on until closer to the start time.

Some people wear bin liners with holes cut out for the head and arms to keep them warm before the race. Just before it starts, you can rip it off.

Well I know that here (Sydney) any discarded clothes at the start line are collected and given to charity. Do they not do that there?

fungirl - you will be fine Im sure.

You have put in the training, so take it easy from now on and dont do anything too hectic between now and then! And hydrate!

Taking on board all the advice I got on here, I had decided to look into a physio next week. However yesterday evening I was dying for some exercise so I went for a brisk walk and the knee felt fine.

Decided to break into a jog and run while paying attention to any niggles. Once I warmed up my knee actually felt fine! So I kept going and pushed myself, and managed to do 3 miles in 30 mins! (Im usually alot slower!)

Knee felt pretty good tbh and was even better after some stretching (esp quad stretches) and it actually feels pretty good again today! Maybe all it needed was a stretch!

Anyway, Im going to see how it goes and if I need to I will definately go to a physio.

Aiming for maybe 5 on SUnday.

Best of luck again guys this weekend! :D

    Hi folks,
just wanted to pop in and say good luck to everyone heading out tomorrow. I disappeared off the radar for a few weeks while my knee healed (was too bummed to log post when I was out of action, but Ive still been lurking!) Heading up tomorrow and going to give this half a go, will probably have to walk a few miles since I had to take nearly 3 weeks off of my already feeble training with the knee, but really looking forward to the buzz anyway.
Anyway, best of luck, everyone have a really great morning, I know I will nomatter what way I end up doing it!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,111 ✭✭✭peanuthead

Think MP3s are allowed, they are in the 5 and 10 anyway.

BEST OF LUCK ALL!! I'm rootin for ya!!

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am soooo happy I just want to say thanks sooo much to everyone here for all the support - both the experienced for their advice when I was floundering and asking stupid questions and to my fellow firsttimers - especially to tipsy, yungwan and peanuthead..thanks for making me fell like I was not on my own (this sounds like an oscar speech doesnt it:D:D:D) ...well I feel like I won one.
Happy with my time 2:18 given that 11 miles took me 2:19 about 3 weeks ago I reckon that's ok..just v glad it wasnt too hot today..am going to take to the sofa and chill for the rest of the afternoon and I reckon I deserve a glass or 2 of vino tonight - fingers crossed for everyone else - hope you are as happy as I am

    Thanks again!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭messymess

Fungirl, well done! I was right behind you at 2:19 :) Was really happy I made it. I've gone from not being able to run 500m to this, so suffice it to say I'm delighted. Was in a world of pain around the 15 acres but I promised myself I was gonna run the distance. It's made me appreciate how serious the full marathon is now though. Will take a couple of weeks off to sort out a knee injury and then get back into it!

I have to say I really loved the main commentator down there today, he was funny :)

As fungirl said,, thanks to everyone on this tread, it's been a wealth of info,,, So guys,,, whats next???
