Best place for short term investment of 300k?

My partner has just sold her house, money coming through next week. We have not found another property yet and it could take 6 months to 1 year before we do (if not longer).

She will have approx 300k from the sale of the house. What is the best thing to do with this money? Preferably invest it somewhere where she can take it out at short notice and not be penalised.
