They were 150,000 people on the dole during the boom why? Who are these people?

the unemployable and the permanently lazy

yes even through the good times when some companies were screaming out for staff you still had a large amount of people on the dole.

Just proves the point that alot of people out there just don't want to work.

Somewhere in Eastern Europe it is compulsory for people to do manual labor for the dole.

Imagine if they brought that in in Ireland tomorrow. There wouldn't be so many people sitting on their arses. If you are looking for a job, well and good I pat you on the back. It's the lazy messes I have to deal with everyday that I would love to see working to the bone for the scribble!

It will only be for 10,000 people apparently and even then you can probably say you dont want to and they'll leave it at that.

God I hate these recession threads. Last ever recession thread I'll ever read.

I really hope that working for your dole comes in soon I think it's a brilliant idea, I know a load of people who just sat around doing nothing and even had of jobs offered to them and they turned them down while I was out busting myself to get some type of work >:(

I hate people who have used the recession as an excuse to sit at home all day, there is always something they could like do a PLC course.

They're probably the same cúnts who're still getting their dole money week in week out and off to the pub every night of the week (and I see it a lot where I live) while I see lots of people who only recently been signed on getting grief from the government and getting cut off while they sort shít out..
I have to watch as my old fella (who worked for 46 years straight and paid a fortune in tax at the high bracket) gets cut off after a year on the stamps and still 3 months later is still scrambling around trying to get all the stupid ass forms they want and every week it's a new form while I see the other cúnts who apparently are too sick to work but can make it to the pub and fall out of there every night get handed their weekly allowance no problem.

If I had my way I'd make every one of them earn their dole payment by doing a 20-30 hour week, even my old fella says it should be this way.

What I can't understand is the people that come in here thinking that the good people on the dole are nothing more than your average blood sucking leaches and nothing could be further from the truth. After I left college, there was zero work for me in Ireland and I went onto the queue. Fast forward a couple of weeks and I was offered a job that paid exactly the same money SW was giving me and at unsociable hours too!

Now, put yourself in other peoples shoes...why the f*ck would you get out of bed at 5am to work nine hours, six days a week - all to get the same amount of money you would receive on the dole?!

    GTFO.

The problem is, there is no work here for qualified and intern searching college graduates as soon as they're out the front gates. That's the f*cking problem. Ireland is going down the toilet and then people have the cheek or lack of education to blame all the downfall on the foreign nationals...pfft - pure ignorance in it's rarest form, Irish. For crying out loud, we are not self sustainable. We live on handouts from the E.U. When will people realise that Ireland was never great.

I understand where you're coming from I was also on the dole until recently. I know there is plenty of people who are breaking there backs trying to get work. I'm just annoyed at the pure laziness of others who don't bother themselves looking for anything.

I very much agree with you though.

Likewise - there are criminals on the SW but the majority are people like myself who are not prepared to take a job in McDonalds when my parents have spent several thousand euro on my education over twenty years - it's absurd. What are my choices? Stay and look for a job that doesn't exist or flee the country? I'm thinking about the latter at this point. And that's a problem at Government level.

Jesus, that Jeremy Kyle show is going downhill. The Atari Jaguar episode might be worth a watch though.

A friend of a friend went to London in the 70's and the first thing he did was to sign on for the GIRO. Then he went to his mates squat. And then got a job on a building site.
He wasn't the only one doing this at that time.
He got free accommodation, tax free job and a little dole bonus.
No doubt some people were doing something similar here during the boom times.

So what? If they're happy living that way then I suppose we should let them be. Most people CHOOSE to work in the system, generally out of fear, but they still have a choice.
