Can I just bring my Irish one, or do I need to get the International one from the AA?

Wouldn't think so. They always ignore it and ask for your original one anyway. Rented in Oz, Tunisia, Italy, Carribean and France and each time i just gave them my own one and had the international one on me just in case on one occassion.:)

Yeah, I have rented in Germany before with my Irish driving licence and also in Australia and was never asked for an international driving licence, which was just aswell as I never bothered with it. It is only a translation of your driving licence into French and Arabic etc. and Irish driving licence holders also hold EU licences. Fuel in Germany is expensive expect to pay €1.45/litre

best of my knowledge you don't need an international drivers license - the purpose of an international drivers license is to translate your license into english as most countries recognise how to read an english written license.

I'm just back from the states and didn't use an international drivers license and rented cars in Toronto, Hawaii, Maui (didn't need them for Vegas, New York or San Francisco.... as public transport is cheap and accessible)
