making smoke without smoke machine ?

I'm making a Halloween scene and cant afford a smoke machine.. Just wondering if there is a different/cheaper way to make smoke/mist ,, Like a smoke stick that will burn for about an hour or something like that.

A load of joss sticks from a health food shop. Safest.

Maplin do Smoke machines. Maybe no so expensive as specialist Disco store?

Fan + dripping 3 in 1 oil + hot plate (i.e. sandwich toaster). Might be fire risk, but this is essentially how model trains do smoke.
