Ubuntu 10 nightmare

So today I sat down to put Ubunto 10 server onto my server at home and desktop onto my laptop (possibly should have installed netbook but assumed that was for little netbooks)

So I'll get straight into the problems

The server stup went fine until I realised I needed to install drivers for my wireless usb adaptor.
Its a linksys WUSB300N. Found instructions online but they didnt work. Stuck here with no solution at all and no help from anywhere, a server that can't connect to the internet or my network, fail.

So a mad problem happend on my laptop. I had installed ubuntu before on my Dell inspiron 1520 and things went fine. There was serious messing with the wireless but outside of that no problems.
However with putting in Ubuntu 10, I'm presented with this gem of a problem.

    http://plixi.com/p/44098192

Hopefully that shows it, its trying to display the imagry but its all teared and ripped and impossible to do anything, there is no way for me to drop down the console menu either.

I was told to try the text based installation which went fine and installed, but when I boot up the same thing happens.

There is no problem with the gpu, as of this morning with windows 7 everything was fine and dandy.

So in short the help I need.

    Laptop

Screen is displaying ****ed up tears and I cant do anything, seems to be compatability with the gpu, but since I cant exactly access anything, I'm wondering if theres some way to sort it, if not its back to Windows or an earlier linux distro ( or a different one).

    Server

Linksys WUSN300N usb adaptor, cannot get the bugger to work. Everything else is fine but without wireless connectivity there is nothing I can do.

Typical me everything was fine under windows but I wanted to give linux another shot, I'd been told the stuff I want to achieve with my server is best served with linux, however as usual, I've been extremely let down and had 6 hours of my day taken from me trying to sort out issues that are so stoneage an operating system should manage them,

Highly dissapointed but if someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it

The whole days waste can be followed below on my twitter,

Ubuntu is pretty good to pick up hardware. Can you run a wire (even temporarily) to the server to run updates?

There's a beta (10.0 I think) available for download, you could try that to see is there any difference?

Yeah ran a cable alright, might try run some updates see what happens

Laptop is resolved, just went back to ubuntu 9 on it, hopefully can fix server tomorrow

Unfortunately have no mouse which makes things slower

Laptop was partially resolved, gave me a hardware update to fix my wireless, ran that, restarted, and now I'm getting the ubuntu logo then nothing, blank screen, nothing fixing anything.

Whats happening is I see the little white ubuntu logo, then some text flashes for a split second and the screen goes blank and nothing.

I've never had so much trouble with pcs until I start messing with linux

Everything is looking fine now, typing this from my laptop.

It is however dropping internet but not disconnecting.

So essentially the icon says im connected, but when i load a webpage it acts as if I'm not and takes a couple of refreshes.

When im trying to install some applications through terminal, its telling me the sources things are errors fetching, which leads me to believe the connection is dropping out, which is weird.

Anyway more messing about for me, hopefully i can get some luck tomorrow with my server, perhaps running all updates then hoping a hardware propriatary pops up.

    i have the wusb600n,

how far are you getting with the install of the driver..after i built it i had to do this
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

    add 3 lines
    blacklist rt2800usb
    blacklist rt2x00usb
    blacklist rt2x00lib

    save and reboot, works perfect

also did you edit some file to add the vendor id and yes to wpa ?
    {USB_DEVICE(0x1737,0x0071)}
    wpa=y
    wpa=y

i solved that problem thanks, ran a text based installation and got the correct propriatary drivers. Turned out I'd got a dodgy one that was causing problems, but laptop is grand now and I'm not going to lie, enjoying the linux experience learning shell.

The server issue is still kicking my ass, going to try what was listed above with those lines of code, let you know how I get on tomorrow, if it works ill carry your child

I'm not really getting anywhere, the instructions I got were all about some ndiswrapper, the steps shown at the end bang it should work, at the end of mine nothing was happening.

Can fill in more tomorrow, going to tackle it whilst watching the united game

Did everything outlined, easy, no problems, but nothing

Oddly enough I dont see any option on the top right that displays my network connections, at all, ubuntu 9 had a little thing on the top right showing connections, ubuntu server 10 shows nothing

Have you tried Linux Mint on the server? It's what I use when I have stubborn hardware.

Reminds me of a 1970s TV commercial: "Stubborn hardware on your server? I use Linux Mint, guaranteed to blast away all those difficult driver issues. Cleans right through to the shine!" :D

I used mint before, was pretty much Ubuntu with a green background from my limited experience.

Still cant get it working and am beyond rage at this stage. For an operating system to not recognise one of the most common brands of networking kit, bit of a joke.

On a plus side I'm really enjoying the linux experience on my laptop, more then before. I'm trying to learn terminal and command stuff among other things, probably why I'm more enraged at this server fiasco.

I've now tried 9 different solutions available online to no avail : /

The OS is free, what more do you expect :)

The reason that the "operating system to not recognise one of the most common brands of networking kit" is most probably because details of the chip aren't available from the manufacturer. It's kind of hard to write a driver if you don't have the details (although reverse engineering is quite common).

The annoying part is that the driver is supposidly supported, theres plenty of fixes, as listed above by another user for example, but they don't seem to work, I'm pretty sure its nothing wrong on my end as the server runs ethernet fine, and the adaptor works fine on other machines : /

Thats what many people think, including me, at first. In fact, while it is based on Ubuntu and Debian, it includes a lot of drivers and codecs not included, by default, on either.

Again I suggest you try Linux Mint, a Linksys adapter with a similar model number WUSB600N, is already listed as working "out of the box" on the Linux Mint hardware database: http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/692 So you might have success with yours.

You could always try using the Mint install disk as a Live CD to see if the adapter works before you do a full install. My tip when installing GNU/Linux, I always have a few install CDs from the top distros as back ups, just in case one OS doesn't work as expected. As I've said, the one I try first, when I've hardware issue is Mint.

I am curious about one thing; why are you using a USB wireless network adapter on a server?

Good luck, I hope Mint works out for you. :)

There is no possability of putting it anywhere with cable access. I'll try mint as a very very very last resort. This adaptor is reported as working on Ubuntu I just can't get the fixes to work, going to try another set of updates and fixes and see if anything comes out of it.

    ok so heres the update.

I have the wireless driver now recognized on the system. But the problem I seem to be having is that I simply can't find a way to search for networks.

Every other ubuntu system ive had has a network applet on the top right, ubuntu server doesnt, so there is no way for me to find a network to connect too.

    Any ideas?

Tried entering manually but no joy, also I cant delete the details that were set for the ethernet connection. I dont want any conflict with my static isps : /

Right click on the panel, click add, see if there's something network related there?

Otherwise I think you can find the NetworkManager in some System menu, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

Nothing to add to the panel.

There is a network manager and I've auto added the network but that NEVer works on any operating system, I need to have the system scan for networks, essentially its not scanning : /

Small update, linux mint resolved the issue and my server is now running wireless.

cheers for the tips on trying mint

Unfortunately ssh isnt working but ill try sort that over the weekend

One of the greatest benefits of a liveCD is to check out the hardware compatibility of the OS and your PC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

Oddly enough the livecd didnt recognise the wireless, but when I went ahead with full install it was picked up quickly.

Happy to report I'm enjoying linux and using shell thoroughly. Pity certain things cant get working easy but other then that things look fine.

Trying to setup sharing options on folders around all the pcs, which looks handy enough.

Setting up remote access was a dream.

Unfortunately I'm one of those who has a server and want to put it to use, not someone who had a use and bought a server.

So I'm very much leaving it turned off, as I've no real use for it beside idling irc all day, which is a pity.

Going to look into some stuff like website hosting, streaming media etc
