does anyone know if a vodafone UK simlocked iphone will work with the vodafone IRL sim?

It won't - other than the name, Vodafone UK and Vodafone IE are completely separate networks...

but you can always unlock it, pick up a uk vodafone sim to activate, jailbreak and install ultrasn0w and bang, you're good to go.
