The USGS has downgraded it to a 7.0 magnitude. Whenever I hear about a major earthquake, my first stop is the USGS PAGER page for the quake: it estimates how many people were affected, and how badly. According to that, about 10,000 people west of Christchurch got the worst of it - not much news yet.

The other metric I look at is the depth of the earthquake. This one was centrered 12km down, which is shallow, and that correlates with a lot of shaking at ground level. The Haiti earthquake back in January was a little deeper (16km).

The country experiences more than 14,000 earthquakes a year, of which only around 20 have a magnitude in excess of 5.0.

There was a 7.6'ish one down there last year at about this time when I was there. Most of them you'd not notice though.

The only person I know living there is Rabies, and I only know him from his posts here.
I hope he's ok. He seems like a really nice person.

Hopefully nobody was seriously hurt or killed.

In honour of Rabies, I'm going to F11 this thread. I know he'd see the funny side.
