Miriam O'Callaghan for the Park?

Surprised there hasn't been a thread on this already. It appears Miriam is testing the water for a run to the Park. It was put to her by the Sunday Tribune and some local radio stations and she hasn't ruled it out.
Notwithstanding the difficulty she might have getting 4 county councils or 20 Tds do people think she could actually win the race? Its shaping up as Norris, Crowley and Michael D.Higgins as the main runners (though Norris is yet to secure a nomination). Assuming all four get nominated do you think O'Callaghan has a chance ?
She'd be very popular with the wimmins, and with the men methinks ;)

    Article here
    http://www.tribune.ie/news/article/2010/aug/29/miriam-ocallaghan-emerges-as-contender-for-preside/
RTÉ presenter Miriam O'Callaghan has emerged as a surprise contender to succeed Mary McAleese as president of Ireland next year.

O'Callaghan is increasingly seen by political parties as a potentially formidable candidate who would have the correct mix of profile and credibility. Speculation is growing in political circles about her suitability for the post.

The current affairs anchor and chat show host did not rule out throwing her hat into the ring when contacted by the Sunday Tribune, but said that standing for the office of president "would be such an extraordinary and unimaginable honour that I wouldn't dare talk about it."

One senior Fianna Fáil figure said that "O'Callaghan would be a very strong candidate", while a Fine Gael source said that, even though the party has not considered approaching her, she would present "an incredible modern image for Ireland".

A Labour party source said: "If she was interested in running she would have to have an argument beyond, 'I'm known'. She would have to have a cause or an agenda in mind."

I don't think she is as popular as she thinks. Besides the fact she is a complete tool and should be nowhere near TV never mind one of the country's major political tv programs. She should be given the boot from RTE IMO.

If she wants to run let her run, wouldn't actually mind that as she would only embarrass herself.

She'll have the spin doctors on her side, which is all that counts.

I wouldn't dismiss her so quickly. Don't forget she now has three programmes on RTE every year- Prime Time, the Saturday with Miriam in the summer and her radio programme. She is in the living rooms of middle Ireland often so its hard to beat her for pure exposure.

Like her or loathe her I believe she could be a serious runner if she gets the nomination. And I've got a tenner on Norris at 3/1 from last March, now I'm scared :(

Edit:- Just checked Paddy Power there and they've got Miriam at 66/1. The article in the Tribune where she doesn't rule it out has obviously flown under the Paddy Power radar because the odds would have adjusted downwards from 66/1 to insure against potential losses. There's an opportunity here for those who like a long punt but it won't stick around for long. So I've doubled up and insured against possible losses on Norris.

    Win
    Single: Miriam O’Callaghan @ 66/1
1 line at €30.00 per line
Total stake for this bet: €30.00
    Potential returns: €2,010.00

The hardest part is getting the nomination. Though Dana got four county councils for her run at the park so its not impossible. If Miriam does get those four CCs then you can rest assured the odds will be more like 2 or 3/1 than 66/1. You heard it here first folks=)

Believe me, once she did run and it went to the rough and tumble of a campaign they she will lose ..... badly. Your bet with David Norris is safe.

The article by the Tribune may well turn out to be mere speculation but it is interesting that she hasn't ruled it out. Miriam loves a bit of power and glamour and the Park job fits the bill.

I'd say she does actually desire it and the media would cheerlead her on all the way. That's why I reckon if she did actually go for it then she has as good as chance as others. Im not a fan of hers but I do recognise the threat she could potentially pose.

According to this she has already ruled it out (from the indo yesterday)

Then at lunchtime yesterday, RTE broadcaster Miriam O'Callaghan rained firmly on the fiesta that had broken out at the weekend following a newspaper report that she was considering running for the Aras in next year's election.
In a brief, one-paragraph statement, she ruled herself out of the race, saying that while she was "delighted and honoured" that some people were considering her as a potential presidential candidate, she would not be standing for the position in the 2011 election.

Ah Dana, declared herself for Galway West and got a miserable 3.5%.
It wasn't down to her views or policies, it was because she was a last minute blow in candidate.
And in Ireland being a blow in is an insult.
Asked to name 5 estates in Knocknacarra which is a large area in westside, Galway city.
Couldn't even name one estate! Yet she wanted to represent these people??

The likes of Bertie Ahern probably knows every street, estate and block of flats in his area.

66/1 is worth a punt for MOC.
As said, she has two TV shows with large viewerships plus her radio show.
Yeah, worth a bet but then she ruled herself out.
She is only 49, can try again in another 7 or 14 years, no rush

I don't care what Miriam does, once she's wearing a green or purple velvet dress when she does it. On a series note, if she did run you couldn't rule her out winning. With the media on her side nothing else really matters. Spin is what wins elections. I doubt she'd have a problem getting support among FF TD's either.

I'll lay that with you at 66/1 if you are on for it.

Pure career move is all this would be for Miriam, who as Ash has said, is very average and overrated. Take Miriam out of Ireland and she'd be a ****ing nobody.

BTW, surely anyone would be better than David Norris? Who woud be the "first man"?

You wait. All the parties will try and clone Robinson and McAleese with middle aged broads. This is clearly a kite being flown in the Tribune for someone.

When first heard Norris could be a candidate I winced and thought it would be a bit embarrassing.
Then the more I thought about it, I decided F*ck yea, why not?
What an image to portray to the world, Here we are that little island that a lot of the world considers quaint and stuck in a catholic rut, and out bounds David. Yea!!!! (he would also be qualified).
Who would be the "first man"? :D ROFL
