Has anyone mentioned the fact City West is a very noisy course due to the Naas Road and Baldonnel Military Airport nearby?

Newlands is another noisy course due to the closeness of the
    Belgard and Naas Road(s).

Augusta national is also a bit loud in places?

couldnt agree with you more there Jimjo. Exactly the reasons im a member there... 20mins drive from house.... and for that money the other options, as you listed, are mostly inferior courses imo.

Dont enjoy hollystown... wouldnt call it a hatchet job, a lazily OTT phrase anyway, but its akin to a swamp in the winter months. saying that tho... theyre still finessing the course but its so rough around the edges at the mo. im sure in 3 years or so theyll have a handle on it. turvey, with respect, just does not do it for me. Elm green bores the tits off me. corballis is amazing in places but not close enough to me for quick evening nine holes. hence citywest with its faults... ( the actual course though, which is very well maintained ) is the obvious choice.

Saying that, as soon as i have the funds available i'll be knocking on castleknock g.c.'s door.

I'm in exactly the same positon as yourself, black. I was a member of Hollys (2mins from me) but the swamp-like nature in the winter put me off. They are working to improve it and they have good inter-club comps etc. plus the value is great.

Elm is just out of the running - far too bland.

Castleknock is just too much right now, although I've heard rumours of new pricing for '11, coming out in Sept. Same goes for Luttrelstown - if they stay open for '11.

If Citywest had a decent committee structure/clubhouse/inter-club thing it would be perfect. As you said it currently very well maintained but I spoke to someone (can't say who for fear of getting him into ****) who told me two groundskeeping companies have put in tenders for 2011 and if the 2nd (cheapest) of the two get it, it'll fast go downhill. No more bunker maintenance etc.

Cheers for the heads up Snowy. might hold off another month till renewing membership so .... and see whats the dealio with castleknock.

i get the impression from the current citywest members, that ive spoken to, that one of the principle things keeping them there is the standard the course is kept in... if that fell away it could be an exodus enmass.

surely theyll go with the 1st on the tender list unless theyve fcuked up theyre tender. fingers crossed.

incidentally on bunkers, ive asked them a few times to stick up a few "please rake bunkers after use" signs here and there. playing there in the evenings during the week some of the bloody things are in a state. kills me. no doubt denim wearing posse at it again ;). sorry for off-topic spiel.

Yep, they'll make all the difference.

Yeah, hopefully the current guys (who have tendered their own budget - oops, I've given the game away ;) ) will win the tender, the do keep it in very good nick.

Got a mail from Castleknock today saying they are releasing details of their '11 offer next week.

    Signs will make zero difference.

I have to disagree with you there... they might trip a few of offending shartboxes up..... hopefully headfirst into a bag of angry cats.

    Blackwaterfish:

Whats the course like at the moment? is the work effecting it in any way? I was thinking of playing it some day next week

We are playing Citywest on Saturday. Will get back to you on the condition following our round.

We can either play Naas or Palmerstown on Friday. Any reccomendations?

big jim and his sons are back in court today..

this could have implications for the course in the short term

    @ brick tamland
at the mo the works have almost no effect on play. you shouldnt cross paths with any of the ongoing works, most or all of it is behind existing tee boxes.

any word on the course re-development up there yet??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭snowy666

It's finished. Or at least looks to be finished.

There's now a 9 hole course with completely new layout where the lakes course was (haven't played that yet so can't comment) and the Championship course is finished.

It has extended holes on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th (old 9th) and the layout has changed so you now play the 9th as the 7th, then the Par 3 8th is er, still the 8th, then the old 7th is the ninth.

The length added to the 2nd is great but they should have left it as a Par 4, instead it's now a very short Par 5. If left as a Par 4, the front nine would be about as hard as you'd come across - particularly off the tee anyway.

The change in layout from the 7th is very good and should have been done years ago. it makes far better sense to play in this order and the walk from the 9th to 10th is now much shorter.

Back nine has no changes, but that's no bad thing, a nice set of 9 holes with 16 and 18 being the pick. (18 is one of the best finishing holes out there).

Still, the issue is behind the scenes, there seems to be changes afoot with management, but a lack of clubhouse/teams/dedicated golf team let the place down imo. However, for the money, it's a great track.
