Got a few different beers to try this weekend after reading recommendations on here.

    Sierra Nevada Torpedo.
    Old Engine Oil
    Dungarvan Blackrock Stout
    Batemans XXB
    Brewdog Punk IPA

Looking forward to this bounty !

    In my humble opinion:

    Sierra Nevada Torpedo : Great
Old Engine Oil : Didn't find it that interesting.
Dungarvan Blackrock Stout : Yet to taste it
    Batemans XXB : Really nice
    Brewdog Punk IPA: Excellent!

Yep the Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA would be my favourite. There's a lot going on in there.

    Cheers, will try soon.

Try Hop Hazard and Hopalotamus by River Horse and Dogfish Heads 60 Minute and 90 Minute IPA.

The Hopalotamus and 90 Minute are imperial IPAs I suppose, so drink them last!

Man I'm a sucker for the hops. I haven't seen it here in a while but the Great Divide's Hercules Double IPA is another cracking beer.

    Cheers, will try soon.

Tried the Sierra Nevada Torpedo and loved it. Have no complaints about this beer at all.

Brewdog Punk IPA very good but found it had a strange aftertaste that I can't put my finger on. Almost a dry herby taste.

I went to Aldi for the first time in my life today, in Portlaoise... A quick shout out to the beautiful and friendly Monika who served me... and bought Rheinbacher. Gonna try it tonight, but I assume it is just Perlenbacher repackaged ??

Also been drinking Nobelander (Lidl) which is 10 bottles / 250mls / 4.8% for €4.49 ... incredible, a night's drinking for the price of a pint...

Old Engine Oil : Liked it found it had a nice hint of chocolate abd coffee taste but just a hint and not over powering.

Batemans XXB : Really liked this also pours a lovely colour and again got a sweet toffee smell/taste from this. It says on the bottle its a Pale ale but I reckoned it was more bitter than ale. But still a very nice drink.

Brew Dog 5 a.m. Saint : Wow , loved it. The other half also shared this bottle with me and demanded I get more for herself ! Very strong hoppy taste from this. If you don't like a hoppy taste stay away from this.

Traditionally they're the same thing. Breweries call them pale ales, and put that term on the bottle labels. The same beer on draught, before pumpclips were invented, was nicknamed "bitter" by the drinkers. I always think there's something a bit wrong when a brewery has a bottle labelled as "bitter", which lots of them do now.

The same relationship exists between "brown ale" and "mild".

Parents have dropped me in 3 new bottles for the football today from Co. Down!

    Strangford Lough Brewing Company :
    Legbiter Ale
    Barelegs
    St Patrick’s Best
    :D

I picked up a couple of bottles of "organic ale" in Sainsburys. Anyone had this ? Not holding out much hope as the bottle seems to be more concerned about it being organic than what the beer actually tastes like.

I also picked up some Marstons Pedigree which is drinkable but kind of so-so with not a whole lot of flavour; some Abbot ale which is quite tasty and at 5% has a bit more body than a lot of English ale; some Brewdog IPA which is lovely and bitter without being rough. Should have bought more of the Brewdog.

Only sort of. Strangford Lough produces a liquid concentrate in Co. Down and ships this to breweries in Britain and the US where it's turned into beer. It's not really Irish beer.

Let us know what they're like. I've never tried them.

Alot or work going on there to make some beer.

Tried the St Patricks Best and was not impressed. Also it may have been too cold but others who tasted it thought it was a bit bland also.

Tried the Old engine oil stout and thought it was very nice.

Also tried the Dungarvan Blackrock Stout and thought it was better than the Old engine oil stout. I got more flavours from the Dungarven stout than the old engine oil.

It saves on a few troublesome necessities like needing a brewing licence and paying excise duty. The end product is also more economical as you're not shipping water overseas.

Tried the rest of the "Co. Down" ales !!!!

Legbiter Ale : Ok better than St Patricks ale anyway.
Barelegs : Same as above except more plain imo.

Wont be purchasing these again I reckon. Happy someone else got them for me.

Had a bottle of 'Brooklyn East India Pale Ake' there the other night. Was very impressed with it.

Purchased a bottle of Meantime IPA this evening and will be sampling in the next few hours.
    Anyone tried it before?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,122 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

Yeah. All very historically interesting and that, but I didn't really enjoy it. If you can get hold of the porter which comes in a similar big corked bottle, it's fantastic.

Just having a banana bread beer there. It is pretty bad. Terrible after taste off it.

Have to agree 100% there with you(your blog). A lot of bubbles and fizz when drinking which is really off putting imo.
Thank god I tasted it before I read it as it might have slightly biased me.

I had the meantime IPA again a few nights ago and was pretty impessed this time round, it's soooo bitter, loved it.
Might go have a look at the stash later I have a big DIPA that's looking to be drank along with a meantime porter but for now it's the Brooklyn Lager.

Just finished a few bottles of Old Speckled Hen (€1.99 in Tesco, stop putting clear bottles of ale on the top shelf), with 2 bottles of O'Hara's Irish Pale Ale to come.

Just sampled some Innis & Gunn Oak aged scottish Beer, very nice beer IMO. I should have bought more than 2:(.

Was in England today and tried Abbots ale from a cask. Much different to the bottle. Was still nice but had a few beers already so cant reall judge.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ... non of your 4 for 10Euro rubbish just an honest 2.50 a bottle from the Harvest in Galway

    Few new beers this weekend:

Sierra Nevada Stout - Not a huge fan of stout but thought this was pretty good, nice taste and a hint of chocolate almost.

Innis + Gunn India Pale Ale - Wasn't a fan of this at all.

Brewdog Hardcore IPA - At 9.2% I wasn't expecting this to taste great but it was really nice. Could barely tell it had such a high alcohol content, would definitely drink it again if it wasn't so expensive for a 33cl bottle.

Bought a couple of Titanic Quarter pale ales to try later, haven't heard any reports on them.

Pretty odd for a so called ipa, more like a beer like Budvar than any ale I ever tasted. Would be be quite nice if it wasn't supposed to be a ale.

I tried that a bottle of that a month or two ago, didn't like it.

Having a bottle of Cribyn Ale which I picked up in Redmond's this evening. Wretched stuff.

Having a "CAMRA says this is a real ale" logo on the bottle doesn't make the stuff any good.

A couple of clotworthy dobbins and an O'Hara's IPA will raise the spirits.

AFAIK, the CAMRA thing just means that it was naturally carbonated in the bottle and has nothing to do with the taste.

    Last night I had
a bottle of Organic Honey Dew
    a bottle of Combined Harvest
a bottle of Grolsch wheat beer.

The Honey Dew was lovely, definitely buying it again. The other 2 were alright just.
