Irish pubs without TVs: do they exist?

Right, so I went out for what I hoped was a quiet few pints earlier anocht and a talk with a friend. Not on my life.

Is there any particular reason why each of the (otherwise quiet) pubs in question had the TV blaring in the background (with British soccer or horse racing or something)? Even in the single room where no TV existed, they had a speaker blaring.

Am I alone in just wanting a quiet pint and chat, or is this blaring TV stuff part of the "new Ireland"?

Would you prefer to have a TV on in your local pub or not? 26 votes

    Yes, I enjoy TV

There might be the odd traditional pub around that might not have a TV. Can't think of a pub on the top of my head that doesn't have a TV. There are some that might have a TV that doesn't work!

The Franciscan Well, North Mall in Cork City! Think that is one?

I walked into the Salt House one day hoping for a quiet pint while the match was on and I've never seen such a massive projector screen in a tiny place....

I dont mind if its a big match, but when they are puttin on Fair city on a 100inch projector, you know its time to leave

Also, if i wanted to sit in a big room filled with noisy people, id go to the cinema

Galloping Green on the N11 has a small tv with a note saying it will only be on for "special events"

The Franciscan Well might not have one in the bar but they did in the smoking area during the world cup. I don't think the Bierhaus has one though.

Don't forget Gravediggers in Glasnevin. I don't think they even have a radio in the place!

New Ireland? No. Maybe Ireland 5 years ago when publicans thought it was impressive to outdo each other on filling empty wall space with a flat screen, showing Sky News on mute, ignoring the fact that it was killing the atmosphere.

With a bit of luck new Ireland will be a bit less fickle than that.

Phil Carroll's in clonmel. The only pub in the town i think without one! Does a roaring trade too!

On of my locals has no tv, has the old fashioned partition for the women and men parts of the bar and even has a little shopette selling teabags, bags of sugar, cornettos and stinger bars!!

The conversation and craic in the place is mighty, it really highlights TV as being a true conversation killer.

afair the Globe or The Long Hall on George's St in Dublin don't have any. There's also a new gastro-pub, L. Mulligan's in Stoneybatter, Dublin that again afair hasn't got one too: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/magazine/2010/0731/1224275578709.html it also sells a lot of fine beers from around the world too aswell as some ace food.

The one that annoys me is when the TV is on a normal channel (not sports) in the pub but its on silent.

What is the point in that?

It always catches my eye too and I find myself looking at it even when its on silent and I don’t know why.

So yea unless it’s showing a match there shouldn’t be a TV on in a pub.

I hate tv's in pubs. Everyone just ends up watchin tv instead of talking to eachother.

Ryans in Kilkenny doesnt have one. One of the best pubs in Kilkenny IMO.

I manage one of the pubs in Monck street. As far as i know every pub in the street has tv's. Only thing i can think of is that you were in my pub in the back lounge where there is a tv but i think it's only been on once in the last year! Customers prefer to just use the pool table or play the jukebox instead of having the tv on. Is it the Laffan Inn your thinking of?
