M50 Tailgating

Anybody hear this on the last word today? They had some Scottish garda on saying punters are sitting in behind 40 foot's on the M50 in order to avoid tolls and that the traffic corp are rigourously enforcing the law if they see anybody at it.

This was probably the worst kept secret on the M50 since the barrier was lifted but probably a bit of a taboo subject given the safety aspects, prob not worth the agro if the HGV driver drops anchor and you are 20ft off his trailer

Can't say I have ever witnessed it personally though so not sure how common it is, probably easier & safer just to get a foreign reg'd car, you will never see a toll bill, period (if you are that bothered about not paying!)

Someone who risks their life to save €4 by tailgating a truck on a motorway deserves to be taken out of the gene pool :D

Oh, I've seen it numerous times. They are usually the idiots who bomb along the outside lane over the bridge and then sweep across 2 or 3 lanes to hitch on to a bumper of an artic.

Once through the toll they bomb down the Blanch slip (Northbound) before cutting back to the main carriageway at the last second to avoid the slight que.

Best thing to do is keep well, well, well away incase the artic does drop anchor and makes and artic/tool hybrid.

I was shocked when one of the lads in our office told me about him doing it - with his wife and kids in the car!! I thought he must be bullsh1tting us until I was driving through toll one evening and noticed that a guy in a jetta was literally driving under the rear of an artic; with his kids in the car!! - I was wondering what kind of stupid dipsh1ts are these people.

Are there not cameras facing both ways to either get your front reg or your rear reg?

    Nope just the front

    Nope just the front

Another smart design decision just like the original motorway not having any safety barriers

I've seen it happen a few times. Madness. By the looks of it you have to get fairly close to the bumper for it to work.

Even if the artic didnt slam on the breaks a small reduction in speed and the car would end up under the trailer.

wouldnt it be a simple solution to install a camera there and record what happens? The technology is there. Why not use it?

If someone is that idiotic and desperate to avoid paying the fine why don't they just buy some black tape and turn a '3' into an '8'

I've seen some plates so dirty and faded that I would imagine the camera would find it difficult to read. If a person really wanted to avoid the cost of the toll there would be safer ways of doing it (obviously not recommended either)

    I brake for tailgaters.

And that's the reason I stay as far away from the accident waiting to happen as possible.

Do you not like the back of your car, or do you fancy a bit of whiplash?

I have a towbar on my car. The damage will be worse for them than it is for me! :D

Plus a bumper for an Escort can be got in a scrapyard cheap enough!

Surely having cameras catchign rear plates aswell as front is the simplest solution?

The simplest solution would be to abolish the tolls, we paid enough damn money to build the road

How is getting rid of a revenue generator simpler than keeping it?

Oh, you were just haveign a rant? My bad.

I'd like a button on my steering wheel that activates the brake lights. Been tailgated a handful of times and its fairly anti social if nothing else.

Perhaps we should be handing out driving asbo's along with points.

True. Also taxpayers are paying National Toll Roads €50 million a year until 2020. No surprise we're once again being ripped off, especially considering the original contract was given to NTR in a lousy deal with no review clause under CJH's government.

Also in that government Padraig Flynn was Minister for the Environment. George Redmond was the acting Dublin City and County manager...

I'd prefer a button my steering while marked "M"...:P

I hear some people like to do the following to these idiots. Keep your right foot on the gas and move your left foot over to barely touch the brakes enough to bring on the lights not to actually brake. Just the gentalist touch should do it for most cars! Then see the horror on their faces when they see the lights flash on and drop back. Now saying that i would never support such behavior and would just ring traffic watch!

    Second that!

Also put in a massive claim for personal injury!;) That will teach them!

I've seen two people come right up behind me and stay there planted on the back of the trailer until through the camera's.What do you do in such a case,I know what I'd like to do but that cant be done. It's easier to forget about it and pray you see them mangled in the barrier up the road in a single vehicle accident.

I have ethelyne glycol in a separate wash tank in the boot of my car.. I have a wash jet under the rear spoiler which is off an S40 Volvo.. this sprays a fine mist rather than a jet of water... If I get tailgated I hit the switch and give them a load of glycol....!

It looks like water.. If said tailgater puts his wipers on he cant see jack sh1t .. Even worse if he operates the washers ...! Leaves them blinded ...!

Only cure is a bottle of vinegar and where would one find that on the hard shoulder of the M6 ;)

So you believe blinding somebody at 120kph is more intelligent then somebody tailgating and is a justifiable response? Have you any idea of the panic that might cause or the damage if the victim trys to swing for the hard shoulder. Tailgating is stupid but your actions are moronic

I'm going to be kind and assume you're trolling. Do it again and it'll be a ban.

As someone who was hit from behind (oo'er missus), I got compo, etc. Still doesn't make up for the fact that my neck is frequently extremely sore to the point that it affects sleep, etc.

Hitting on the rear fogs would have much the same visual effect as hitting the breaks - I've heard of an ambulance driver who uses that tactic to ward off tailgaiters (as cars on the motorway will often tailgate an ambulance as it's gives them a clear run at high speed).
