Have to get this off my chest...

So one of my friends has a provisional driving license and he was driving around with no licensed driver and no L plates. He was stopped at a Garda check point and the Guards let him off with no fine, no warning or anything! They said they weren't fining people because of the recession!
I know he is my friend but this annoys me!!
How many other people are they letting off from fines? In my opinion, a car is a luxury. If you can afford to run a car then you should be prepared to take the crap that comes with it if you don't follow the rules!
What else are they letting people away with? With the state of the country at the moment, should they not be fining people and putting the money back into the economy or something?!

Maybe I'm wrong but I just think it's a bit of a joke!

    Feedback please?
    Thanks.

Sounds like either your friend is telling porkies or that Guard is an incompetent fool.
Either one sounds plausable to me.

The gardai were prob just happy to take the coffee he had in the car off him, that's prob the reason he was stopped in the first place

They were joking. it was a throwaway statement related to you by your buddy after he got a warning. Because he did get a warning, he's just not telling you either because he wants to look cool or he's forgotten in his euphoria about not getting fined.

They're strict on tax, insurance, nct, speeding, bla bla bla... But they tend to be quite lenient on LP drivers as long as they're not driving down the road backwards or something.

i'm sure you wouldn't be complaining if it were you that the guards let off op.

Well I have a full license but when I was learning I always had a fully licensed driver with me.

The gardai will let LP drivers off sometimes as there is a waiting list for the test & in country places without public transport, a car is the only way to get to work. When there is no waiting list, they will enforce it. That IMO is a reasonable stance for them to take on the issue provided that the driver has everything else in order & also that they are not acting the ass on the road

This person hasn't applied for their test and they live in Dublin. What does IMO stand for?

the guards could stop you for forgetting to indicate etc. i doubt you'd give out about being let off.

anyway, you really must have very little to worry about if this is getting your goat up.

I know I shouldn't. I just think it's silly. If they are letting people off with that then what else are they turning a blind eye on? And their excuse is the recession!!

Driving on a provisional without a person in the car who has a full licence?

They should've dragged him out of the car & beat him to death with his spare wheel, then dismembered him, shat in his skull & set fire to the car before wheeling it into oncoming traffic.

That'd show those LP bastards a lesson. And before anyone says that's a bit too much - you let one little thing like that go & next he's selling crack cocaine outta the boot of his car & not paying his motor tax on time.

Driving without a licensed driver and no L plates is hardly in the same league as forgetting to indicate, but yeah, if they wanna stop for forgetting to indicate then fair enough - go ahead!

And I do have bigger worries in my life actually but all I wanted to do was share a thought so there is no need to get personal. That is what a forum is for after all isn't it? Sharing thoughts and getting opinions rather than personal digs?
