    OP you could just read your car's manual. Not being rude or anything but that WILL actually tell you what the manufacturer recommends not what your local dealer THINKS is best.

    My Audi was set up for 15000k service by my dealer so they could screw me for an oil change whereas Audi themselves said it only needed its first service at 30000k or 2 years.

    Yes I went for the 15000k service and for that pleasure they charged me €350 but I insisted on it being put on the longlife cycle which they dutifully did.

    I would be a person that looks after a car and always trys to prevent something from happening rather than fixing it later.

    No matter what car I had new or what anyone says I myself would change the oil after a thousand or two thousand miles and no way would I let a car go 18,000 miles without an oil change. The oil is the blood of the engine. Letting the oil thin out is the worst thing anyone can do.

    My current car I change at 5,000 miles for the last 6 years and at 200,000 miles she is running as sweet as a nut and uses no oil.

    You need your timing belt done now. 4 years or 90k km afaik. Whichever is first and I wouldn't really put it on the long finger either just in case...

    You had more luck than me. They brought me in at 15000 km, reset again for another 15k km even though I wanted it on longlife. Eventually they changed it to about 21k km for the oil change but distance to service remained at 15k km. Talk about taking the piss. Anyway I got VAGCOM, serviced it myself with longlife approved Mobil 1 & reset it to the longlife system. It then showed 29000 km to service & something similar to oil change. Doing it myself though, I will change it sooner than that. Just annoys me that the dealer charged fully for longlife oil too.

    I'm not sure if petrol VW's can be put on a long life cycle. If they can its 30,000km and if they cant its every 15000km.

    EPM is right, I think VW recommend every 4 years or 75000 miles.

    All newer VAG cars have a longlife service intervals. Use Castrol SLX (only supplied to dealers) or Castrol Edge which is the same. Intervals are max. 30000km or 2 years but it is variable. Oils have an optimum running temp. and if you do short trips (when engine is cold) the oil will degrade faster.
    On average a service interval is 20-25k

    All oils degrade in the same manner but newer cars can alter the interval based on how the car is driven.

    VAG cars will register in memory the date when the interval appears so if you get it serviced when due you wont have any issue with warranty.
    I would imagine most brands do the same.

    1000km is extreme and a total waste of money.

    I work at a VAG dealer so this is not my own opinion.

    I think the BMW way of doing things is particularly efficient. Just hand your key into the service desk, where they can tell everything about the car - what its due, when warranty is up etc.

    I can check for you.
    If its an Irish car post the reg, or if an import ill need the chassis.
    Depends on the engine code but typically every 5 years (no time given by VAG) or at the correct millage.

    I kinda agree with bmw535d. I have large commercials which need to be serviced after 1000km.....I tend to do the same with new cars all the time. Maybe its a consequence but i left one car go to 20000km before first service and it drank oil afterwards and gave trouble.. Maybe it was a consequence but thats my thinking..
