What mileage should be on it?

That would depend on the model!

An evo would need a service after 4,500 miles, for example. Most common service intervals would be 10-12k.

    It's a 1.5d qashqai

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,272 ✭✭✭✭Max Power1

    12500 miles, according to this.

Should give the details in the service book.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭Stewie Griffin

Thanks Max. I presume you mean 12,500 km?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,160 ✭✭✭bmw535d

um the very first service as in an engine oil service is usually done after 1000 miles.

No, the site I linked to says miles (its a UK site, they still have the speedo and clock in miles over there :D).

Cant see an irish link/km service interval.

    Ok thanks Max.

Diesel Qashqai is due a service every 20,000km or every 12 months. Its due a brake fluid change at 40,000kms or 24 months regardless of the mileage..

Timing belt is due at 120,000km.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 188 ✭✭Stewie Griffin

Thanks for all this info lads. I heard no mention of a oil change after 1000 miles before? Can you expand there bmw?

Thats usually a diagnostic and inspection, not an oil change. I've never, ever seen or been recommended to change the oil in a brand new car after 1000km.

Does it have a service interval reminder on dash?
Most new cars have a variable service interval and use longlife oils.
Check the manual and if it does you just wait until it appears on dash.
If its variable then its depends on your driving habits as to how soon the light comes on

Not sure tbh...will have a gander.

Nissan Ireland recommend it every 20,000km or 12 months.

i think its something to do with the engine being run in. you know where you shouldn't pass 3000rpm for a while until the engine is running like a well oiled machine, pardon the pun. the reason for this is that when an engine is new the pistons are very tight inside the cylinders.during the first 1000miles there is alot of wear of the piston rings as they bed in to the cylinder walls.. like the bedding in of brake pads. this results in alot of tiny metal contaminants in the oil etc. which isn't very good for the engine. i know my bmw needed to be service'd alot sooner than the normal 15000mile interval for the first time.

so id get the oil changed in a brand new car sooner than the normal 12,500 interval if i where you. it should say in your service booklet too.

Things have moved on somewhat in the past 20 years, and no new car that I've bought in the past 5 years has required a "run in" 1,000 mile service.

I'd stick with Drummerboy's 20k suggestion - reckon he knows what he's talking about.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭x in the city

the first service is the most important, so check it out..

a new car takes time for the parts to bed in and etc, a neglected car after 5,000 or so miles is very bad news

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 89 ✭✭dub7_2010

Not sure about Nissan but VAG groups first service is between 20 and 30k.
Pistons rings and short block would certainly be covered under goodwill warranty for a few years after normal warranty expires so if there was a risk of damage they would tell you to get it serviced sooner.

jeez. my last 3 new cars in the past 6 years had a huge sticker on them telling me to run them in. don't pass a certain rpm 70 mph etc.. would love to know the cars you buy that run them selves in? or maybe im buying new cars from 20 years ago?

Ah - so you got suckered by the dealer sticker? Was there a charge for this initial inspection?

I know of no manufacturer's (mainstream) who recommend a 1,000 mile service.

And I'm talking about considerably more than 3 cars in the past 5 years ;)

    OP,

My Impreza needed an oil change at 1,000 miles/1600 kms last year.
Check your service booklet or manual. It's important to do this right, especially for warranty reasons.

BMW 535 d has given you some good info and advice there.
Best of luck with your car! ;)

Aye, when I bought my 58 plate A3 (in September 08 surprise, surprise :)) I was told to run it in and the manual also recommends to run it in. However, I didn't need an oil change after 1000 miles. My first service was at 18000 miles (long-life oil).

Stewie, how about ringing the Nissan dealer (I presume) that sold it to you? Let us know what they say.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

Lads, I've bought and sold more Qashqai's than more people in this forum own.

We've supplied a good few over the last few years, and I can assure you that there is no requirement to change oil after 1000km. This goes for most cars I've sold - Ford, Audi, Toyota, BMW, etc etc etc.

The 1000km interval for a new car is to ensure everything is running ok so the dealer will not get hit by a warranty claim that could be easily prevented if spotted early.

Call Nissan Ireland in the morning if you are unsure.

Running in went out with the fog (lights) :D

c.25 years ago some need for gentle initial engine use and an early oil change was needed to ensure long and reliable life. Compared to now tolerances were huge, and oils were basic.

p.s. Giving the brakes some time to bed gently from new is still a good idea.

I have not heard of a specified 1k mile oil change for years although if one was buying a car to keep forever, it might not be a bad idea. It certainly couldnt hurt but no requirement for it.

My 2008 Forester need an oil change at 1600kms. The dealer impressed the importance of this on me at purchase, saying that the cars were delivered with special oil for running-in.

    .

Holy Jesus, I hope thats not a diesel?

I change my oil (BMW LL04) every 7K and my car is far from new.

Even at a recommended 18K miles I would definitely have the oil changed out at a minimum of half that to be on the safe side.

That is a long time for oil to be in a car, new engine or not.

That's what I thought too but they were pretty insistent! Yup, it's a diesel. Just had the second service there on Monday at 36,500 miles but I've added oil between services.

Requiring a run in 1000 mile service and not ragging a car for the first few thousand miles are not the same thing.

    +1

Shows people need to read posts before leaping to an argument straight away!

OP you could just read your car's manual. Not being rude or anything but that WILL actually tell you what the manufacturer recommends not what your local dealer THINKS is best.

My Audi was set up for 15000k service by my dealer so they could screw me for an oil change whereas Audi themselves said it only needed its first service at 30000k or 2 years.

Yes I went for the 15000k service and for that pleasure they charged me €350 but I insisted on it being put on the longlife cycle which they dutifully did.

any idea what is the service interval for a 2006 1.6 petrol vw jetta.
I've 55K km on it. When does the time belt need doing>

I would be a person that looks after a car and always trys to prevent something from happening rather than fixing it later.

No matter what car I had new or what anyone says I myself would change the oil after a thousand or two thousand miles and no way would I let a car go 18,000 miles without an oil change. The oil is the blood of the engine. Letting the oil thin out is the worst thing anyone can do.

My current car I change at 5,000 miles for the last 6 years and at 200,000 miles she is running as sweet as a nut and uses no oil.

You need your timing belt done now. 4 years or 90k km afaik. Whichever is first and I wouldn't really put it on the long finger either just in case...

You had more luck than me. They brought me in at 15000 km, reset again for another 15k km even though I wanted it on longlife. Eventually they changed it to about 21k km for the oil change but distance to service remained at 15k km. Talk about taking the piss. Anyway I got VAGCOM, serviced it myself with longlife approved Mobil 1 & reset it to the longlife system. It then showed 29000 km to service & something similar to oil change. Doing it myself though, I will change it sooner than that. Just annoys me that the dealer charged fully for longlife oil too.

I'm not sure if petrol VW's can be put on a long life cycle. If they can its 30,000km and if they cant its every 15000km.

EPM is right, I think VW recommend every 4 years or 75000 miles.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 89 ✭✭dub7_2010

All newer VAG cars have a longlife service intervals. Use Castrol SLX (only supplied to dealers) or Castrol Edge which is the same. Intervals are max. 30000km or 2 years but it is variable. Oils have an optimum running temp. and if you do short trips (when engine is cold) the oil will degrade faster.
On average a service interval is 20-25k

All oils degrade in the same manner but newer cars can alter the interval based on how the car is driven.

VAG cars will register in memory the date when the interval appears so if you get it serviced when due you wont have any issue with warranty.
I would imagine most brands do the same.

1000km is extreme and a total waste of money.

I work at a VAG dealer so this is not my own opinion.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

I think the BMW way of doing things is particularly efficient. Just hand your key into the service desk, where they can tell everything about the car - what its due, when warranty is up etc.

    I can check for you.
If its an Irish car post the reg, or if an import ill need the chassis.
Depends on the engine code but typically every 5 years (no time given by VAG) or at the correct millage.

I kinda agree with bmw535d. I have large commercials which need to be serviced after 1000km.....I tend to do the same with new cars all the time. Maybe its a consequence but i left one car go to 20000km before first service and it drank oil afterwards and gave trouble.. Maybe it was a consequence but thats my thinking..
