    Eye of the Tiger

Classic 80s action trash with Gary Busey as an ex-convict Nam vet who returns home to discover his town in the grip of a violent drug running motorcycle gang. Cue plenty of crashes, smashes, things going boom and enough wanton violence to satisfy anyone in search of an old school action flick. A great supporting cast including the always appreciated Yaphet Kotto and Seymour Cassel bring added gravitas to a film which features Kitt from Knight Riders big pick up brother.

The Offence - very unnerving police drama starring Sean Connery:

Santa Sangre - Badger mad Psycho style film by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Haunting and very moving.

    Conspiracy

Hardly anyone I know has seen this film. It is one of the most chilling films I have ever seen. Its a recreation of the Wannsee Conference where the final solution was planned.

Excellent choice - A film financed by HBO and shown in the early part of the last decade. Truly chilling how they discuss the 'solution' in such a matter of fact almost banal way. The entire cast were superb especially Kenneth Branagh whose performance was genuinely terrifying. Here is a clip[ -

This is another great movie from the late 80's by John Carpenter called ' They Live'. Ingenious sci / fi movie with excellent plot and brilliant action. I would highly recommend everyone to view the clip to see what I mean.

    'The Kindred'
An 80's horror flick that hasn't received the praise that it should have. In fact, it hasn't even received a DVD release. It focuses on bizarre experiments carried out on genetic mutations by the mother of the central character, a scientist, who becomes interested in his mum's work after she says he has to destroy Anthony...his "brother".

For a low budget film made in 1987, the slimy effects aren't half bad and everyone is fine in their roles. Special mention should go to Rod Steiger, who was perfect for the crazy doctor role he has in this.

Read through the entire thread amazed at how many of us (mis?)spent our youths watching late night C4 movies and until page 16, thought I had one no-one else had mentioned: The Year My Voice Broke - great Aussie coming of Age. The late night movies on channel four used to be excellent, introduced me to Before Sunrise, Dazed and Confused, American Grafitti, Cinema Paradiso, La Femme Nikita and far, far more.

It won't be obscure to animé fans but aside from a few friends most seem to have never heard of Porco Rosso.

Would also second the mention for Lords of Dogtown.

And another 'so bad, it's brilliant' movie: Blood Surf.

I'm looking for some obscure classics. They don't even have to be well regarded, just movies that you like even though certain bits of them might be ropey.

My own nomination is Miracle Mile. I caught it on TV late at night and its stayed with me for years. I downloaded it recently and its still great. Its an 80's (my god is it 80's) end of the world flick starring Anthony Edwards, him off ER, in which he answers a phone and the voice at the other end tells him that nuclear war is imminent. I don't why I like it so much (its rough around the edges) but it has a great off kilter feel about it that I think most people will hate and its strangely paced but for me this only helps to make it more unsettling. It really should be a stinker but I love it! Anyone else seen it? Know anything else like it?

Max Manus dont know of if its been mentioned before.
Very good film about Norwegian resistans fighters during ww2.
    Subtitled.

Let The Right One In - really enthralling, atmospheric film

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

Persepolis - Inanian biography, can't recommend it enough

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808417/

I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK - from the director of Oldboy, quirky and interesting (very different from his other stuff)

The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang. Very funny and quirky comedy. Made by the same guy who directed Napoleon Dynamite but far superior I reckon.

Weirdsville. Kinda stoner comedy but very well acted and written. Give it a chance, its great.

Most people I meet never heard of it. Cult classic.

I'm not one for placings and lists in general but this could easily qualify as my favourite film ever.

    Brilliant stuff altogether.

Dead and Buried - Love the dreary atmosphere of that horror. Early 80's horrors were great.

Just noticed the OP spelt "favourite" wrong!;)

Have been reading through some of the thread's here and I can see that Nic Cage isn't receiving a lot of love from many people:D:D Apart from some of his acting being terrrible he has got one of those jibs alright, so Im thinking this one might not be as well known or slightly slipped under the radar.

Lord of War - Cage is outstanding in it imo his best film by far, and the movie itself in an eye opening epic. I copied and pasted one of the reviews from IMDb to give an idea of the storyline and any film containing Bridget Moynahan is well worth a look anyways;)...The movie is based on the true story of Viktor Bout a notorious Russian arms dealer who was suspected of having supplied arms and weapons to some of the worst leader's in history and in turn help start numerous wars around the world.

    10/10
A movie about a gunrunner who arms the dictators, tyrants, and genocide-perpetrators of the world should not be this deliciously funny. Lord of War is story-telling perfection. The opening scene depicts the life of a bullet, from its creation in the factory to the moment it blasts through the head of a poor African child. Nicolas Cage is Yuri Orlov, the son of Ukrainian immigrants, who becomes the world's most successful arms dealer. Writer/director Andrew Niccol took every major world conflict of the past 25 years and seamlessly incorporated them into a smart, funny, complex story about violence, corruption, and the essence of warfare. Lord of War has no clear-cut, black-or-white, good-or-evil "moral of the story," but no intelligent observation ever does. It's just a fabulous film. "I never sold to Osama Bin Laden," Yuri tells the audience. "Not on moral grounds, but because his checks were always bouncing back then."

You can watch a trailer for the film here-

    Two old Gary Cooper movies.

    Bengal.Lancer.jpg
Some great scenes between Cooper and Franchot Tone.

    WESTERN.JPG
Again, great scenes with Cooper and Walter Brennan.

Of their time, but hugely enjoyable and a lot of humour.

Okay, these are a little more recent but still might have dropped under the general radar:

Herzog's wonderful Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, about the 'bliss of evil'

And a great 'documentary' by Banksy:

This thread is a bit long so these may have been said already.

13th Warrior - with Antonio Banderas as an Arab scholar traveling (and later fighting) alongside Vikings. Written by Michael Crichton and despite the strange array of "Norse" accents is actually a decent albeit silly watch, just a straight up action movie, kind of Conan-ish.

Grandma's boy - stars a few of the guys you see in Adam Sandler movies but without Adam Sandler which is presumably why i'd never once heard of it until i got a loan of the dvd. Once again, actually a pretty funny film but expect an epic amount of stupidity, real turn your brain off stuff.

The last one is a film called The Castle and is actually relatively well known in Australia. Absolutely deadly film, seen it a few times now and its a brilliant watch, funny, quirky characters with an excellent script and performances (Even has a younger Eric Bana). Highly recommended.
