Interest in a Boards.ie SC2 cup

    Hey all,

So, SC2's out officially, and Boards.ie seems to have some proper discussion.
I'd be interested in running a cup for boards, but before I do, It's always a good idea to gauge interest.

    Details
1on1 cup, rounds are best of 3, final is best of 5.
Map choice via map elimination system.
single elimination bracket, full placement (i.e. in a 16 player cup, everyone plays 4 games, so we have full rankings from 1-16)

If you're interested, just post a reply here, and state if you think the cup should be run in 1 night, or give players 3 days each round (and they can organize a time that suits between each other), either cup style works, night cups are easier generally, but players have to commit a full night to it.

It's a good idea, but i think you'll need to wait a little while till people get some experience playing. Anyone who played the beta a lot will hammer anyone else.

I'd be up for it anyway, but I'd be one of the people to be hammered by a beta-pro.

I reckon a mini-lan could work at some stage too? Or even just have a group going to midlans or something?

    Sounds good, I'd definitely play.

Well, seeing as registration should stay open for 2 weeks, it should only take 3 weeks for players to learn much of the game.

And the tournament system means that players should only get 1 spanking, next game should be half as much of a spank, next half again, and the final one should be close.

I'll give it a bash if it's in a few weeks. Haven't even played it yet!

Battle.net chatrooms are due for release some time:

But before that, an IRC chat is the easiest way.

I didn't know IRC still existed.
    Always hated it.

Although its not on it, A steam group could be created, and Starcraft 2 added as a non steam game, that way we could see player quickly who are online and playing Starcraft2 within Boards and chat/group chat/ schedule even as necessary ?

Entirely possible, and some cup organisers swear by steam groups, but I have a personal preference to IRC, mainly because it saves a log of the chat.

A little 2v2 cup might be fun too and not as intimidating as the dreaded ONE ON ONE

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 954 ✭✭✭BluE-WinG

Id definately be up for this.

Count me in, the 3 day rounds sound like a better option to me, as people have differing schedules etc.

Also 2v2 would be good fun too.

I'm gonna start my multiplayer career on Saturday night if anyone is up for a few games.

    Great idea!

Couple of issues I can see though, at the moment its just out and not everyone even has it yet so we need to give it time for the non-beta's to catch up (I havent even gotten my copy yet as I'm on hols!). I dont even know the names of the units at the moment much less any build orders etc.

2v2 is a lot more fun then 1v1, and 4v4 would be awesome as we could have small tight clans of players and big moshes! :)

Summer holidays are going to impact on it too, so maybe we should test a proto-cup and have the main event in the autumn?

Sounds a fantastic idea, 2v2 sounds more fun tbh :D

Also remember custom games can host a fair amount of spectators too so there should be a good atmosphere.

If you need a hand holla, have some experience with WC3 events, this should be lols.

As for specs, if it's a 3 day cup, doesn't work too well (unless you cast replays). If it's a night cup, I'll get a pro-caster to commentate for the night :P

The reason not to go for 2on2 is that it makes it 4 times harder to arrange a time to play, and for a successful cup, 2 weeks notice is recommended. I'll probably announce around the 10th, so that means the cup won't start til september as is.

    Great stuff so far everyone!

Im sure we can get something organised soon and maybe have a practive cup to see how well it can be organised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,387 ✭✭✭✭DeVore

I've always took the view that the match starts from the moment its declared as a match and the ability of the players to organise their lives to play is part of it too... understandbly some people get last minute interruptions that cannot be helped but if everyone agrees to a time and date and someone doesnt show, too bad. You wasted everyones time and deserve to lose imho.

    Im interested

Players can't always agree on a time to play is the problem.

I personally believe that the most important thing is to get the game played. Def losses should only be given when a game not being played is delaying the tournament as a whole.

I'm down for this like syndrome.

I'd probably play... I think a 1 night cup would be easiest and best for any spectators

Now imagine if it was a 2v2 or a 4v4 :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,387 ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Some how it works for soccer :)

If the night is agreed beforehand then people either turn up or not. If you can't commit to playing one night, you shouldn't be putting your name down IMHO.

Pick a night in late august and let's all get stuck in.

Well, it's different for 1 night cups. I was talking about 3 days per round cups.

That said, with cups announced 2 week in advance, a 60% show up rate is the norm.

Anyway. I've decided on a night cup, gonna run it in early september (I have more time then), and I'm gonna sort some things out and get back to ye.
