€170,000 Bus Stop

It shouldn't have happened but you have to remember there is alot more to construction than meets the eye. I'm more shocked at how the shelter costs €30,000 on its own. If they were a thousand euro then they could buy them and use the advertising revenue for themselves

Only in ireland, our Motorways somehow cost more to build here compare to ones with extra lanes in Germany. We even mamaged to spend over three times the amount on Dublin Airport's T 2 compared to what it cost to build the larger T5 in Frankfurt.:rolleyes:

It is not a new bus stop. It's bloody well refurbished with a wheelchair sign painted on the ground beside it.

AND IT IS USED FOR 1 Dublin Bus.

The money is spent, so where exactly does the 170k go???? The journo doesn't even pay this any heed.
Who built the bus stop? who was contracted? Where was the money deposited? Show me the accounts. Who benefits? Was it all a lump sum or multiple invoices for the work? The money (possibly tax money, lest we forget) didn't simply disappear, we just need to know where it has gone since the work was completed. Has it been invested elsewhere and is now part of an individual or companies assets?

It is all very fishy. A little transparancy is very much needed!!

It's well known that when it comes to doing a job for the government, what should have cost say 20 euro ends up costing 200 euro, it's the company involved that shafts the government. That said, the government (or county council) should say "you can do this job but it must only cost us x amount, anything over it is your problem".

They could have found out how many disabled people live within a 500mtr radius of that bus stop and parked a wheelchair accessible taxi outside each ones house and still have spent less money!

Your right and this is how all government contracts are awarded now.

However, the article talks about installation of new ducting/ cables / Public lighting/ earth moving/ car parking so there is definitely more to the story than meets the eye.

If they encounter problems when digging they could have to reroute cables and everything. Maybe new minipillars or new esb connections which also cost money.

I clicked on this thread with anger running through my veins but everyone here can rest assured that this is by no means the worst case of money wasted.

The trucks on the M50 that spread the salt and put out cones have been upgraded from 08 to 09 to 10 every year.:mad::mad::mad::mad: They are all Mercedes Benz trucks and get little or no use. Vehicles like this should be upgraded on 10-20 year cycles hows that for a waste of money. These trucks cost so much its not even funny

I just read the article and it says that Bus Eireann supplied the bus stop for a cost of €30,000 but the council will bear the cost of the other €100,000 worth of work.

From the article:

The bill will ultimately be paid by the taxpayer, as the cost will be reimbursed to Dublin City Council by the Department of Transport.

There was a shedload of other work done but still €100,000 seems steep for what sounds like unnecessary work from people that know the bus stop in question.

True they can't put it up anywhere but they should look for less expensive alternative sites. Administration Costs ???? It was not a tribunal after all. Structural works ???? It was a bus shelter. You could buy a site, apply for planning permission, engage a solicitor, employ a builder to clear the site and build a house for that amount and the house would be a s*** load bigger than a bus shelter. I live near this shelter and see it every day. It does not look like €170,000's worth. I wonder if this went out to tender.

For 170k I'd personally stand there with an umbrella on wet days for those that would need it, which would be zero people. Handy money.

WTF. WE DONT EVEN NEED A BUS THERE NOBODY USES IT. Never mind of the cost the bus stop wasn't needed in the first place. Just the pole for the one bus that stops there would do

There is a bus stop just a few mins away that alot more people use

Yep, the journo is typical of most Irish journos...no real investigation, details, numbers. Break it down..let's see where the bad smell is coming from. Surely there's a right to this type of invoicing information? Somebody cottoned on that between Dublin City Council, Dublin Bus and the Dept. of Transport paying for the bill there was a bit of extra money to be made...
