Knocking Over To People

Do people still do this? I always call / text before I am coming over to someone, mostly to see if they will be there and as a warning that I may be arriving. Are the days gone when someone knocks over without prior notification? I think so, if I am sitting in my Mams house and the doorbell rings, we all look at each other with confusion. Once it has been established that none of us are expecting anyone, someone curious may brave their way to the door expecting beggars / salespeople and brace themselves to kindly tell them to gtfo, or ignore the bell altogether.

I only knock over people when I'm drunk

The advent of the electric, and later the portable, phone definitely has killed this.

Well I think it's polite to let someone know you want to call over.

It's a bit annoying when you're just about to head out and someone calls over and you get delayed for a while.
It's kinda awkward too if someone comes over while you're having dinner.

Yeah I always give a call or a text before I go to anyones house & I expect the same courtesy in return.

Otherwise if the doorbell rings I think it's another chugger & won't answer it.

Never answer knocks or door bell anymore! If they don't have your number, they ain't worth getting up for!

I remember calling over "uninvited" to friends when I was a kid.
If they were having dinner you just sat in their room, reading comics until they were done.

Miserable fcukers wouldn't even give you any!!

No one calls to my house unless I know about it. Same the other way around. I'd always text or call first! The way of the times.

A lot of my friends live in the same area and we tend to just knock in without warning.

As kids, giving a knock on the door to see if someone was coming out didn't seem to odd...

But as I don't live near my friends anymore... I'd be more inclined to call / txt a couple of days before hand to arange hanging out... and would expect it the same the other way around...

I prefer if some calls, but don't mind a random knock most of the time. If someone was regularly doing it an inconvenient times, it would be annoying.

I also check who is knocking. I can kindly tell them to GTFO, but someone could easily have lost your number, run out of battery, etc.

I wasn't sure if it was just growing up that that stopped or the emergence of mobile technology, which happened around the same time.

I live far away from people too so would never get a knock. It's either tv inspector or them bastards throwing in rubbish, so I don't answer :)

Good way of putting off house thieves as well now that I think of it ;)

Only to my Mam's house. Although half the time i'd arrive and there would be nobody home so that's annoying. Definitely wouldn't arrive unexpected to a friends house.

One time a friend of mine popped into mine because he was working on my road, he knocked on the door of my 2 room granny flat I use to live in, I shouted out to hold on, threw on a dressing gown, answered the door and invited him in as I picked up all me and my gf's clothes that were strewn around the room and she got dressed rather embaressed in the other room, I just had a big smug, giggidy head on me.

    He calls first now.

It's only polite to let people know you're calling over.

I remember back in the day my mum used to put me and my brothers' coats on when the doorbell rang so if it was someone she didn't want to see she could say we were on our way out. If it was someone she did want to see she'd say we were just back.

Yeah its a pain in the arse when someone unexpected knocks on your door. Especially if its on "naked tuesday" or "gimp suit friday"..........

Nobody seems to bother ringing me and knocking on the door is just part of the process of walking straight into the house. Sometimes the first I know about them entering my house is seeing them walk though the sitting room door. It's my close friends that do that but still it can be a bit annoying at times if I'd planned to do something menial I'll end up putting it off till later which means it just doesn't get done.

That's a bit much in a small town, people would think I'm weird.

The only person that doesn't ring before knocking is the T.V license man.

Everybody fones ahead before coming round mine........... but that may have something to do with the fact that i live in the middle of nowhere and theres a rather large marble sign on my gate which clearly reads" KEEP OUT NO CALLERS"............ and yes i am serious!

When I was young I lived the house beside my then best friend for a good few years until I was around 9. We used to call over to each others houses in the morning, and go home in the evening, only leaving for dinner. It got to the stage where we let ourselves in without knocking :)

    It will change :p

I had that someone arrive at the door in a taxi,i mean got a taxi over. Not a phone call nothing. It is very rude to assume you have time to entertain people.

It depends on the personality of the person who you're calling around to. Some people like to prepare themselves for a visit. There's times when I wouldn't like even my friends coming over unannounced.

Nothing will change. 50% of my mates are married and we all still drop in. In fact 3 dropped in last Saturday night at 1.30am and didnt leave till 9pm Sunday evening. Its no biggie. If my OH was there they'd know to stay away :)

    same here,

me and my mates would call in ones and twos to each others doors.

often times my best mate would call into me or i to him first thing in the morning, we'd dissapear for the day only running home to scoff down dinner, often times that involved eating 2 dinners, one in each others houses lol :D

got to the stage where my mate would walk straight in, say hi to the other members of the family, call out for me and then head into the kitchen and stick on the kettle!!!

Miss them days :( life was simples.

Why? What kinds of friends are they? Are you organising giant orgy swinger sessions as soon as the OH is away?

    Can I come?
