Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Iran in the 1970s (pre-revolution of course).

Tried to include a couple of images but for some reason they both just showed up as broken images.

    Islamic Revolution.

In fairness, life under the Shah wasn't all rosy and sweet. Not the place to get into it, but it's worth a look at.

So I hear, and I've no doubt. But can you imagine the disappointment? "Here lads, the French had a revolution and now all they do is sit about all day smoking and drinking wine, let's have a go." talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire!

Theres a very good animated film about a young girl coming of age during the Iranian revolution called "Persepolis", definitely worth watching for anyone interested in the subject. It gives you an idea of the some of the recent history of Iran and how the revolution effected peoples lives.

You know it was built on a graphic novel of the same name? Same drawing style - haven't seen the film, but I assume Marjane Satrapi (the author/artist) was deeply involved.

Read the graphic novel when it was first released. Quality stuff. One of those that helped convince the parents of my teenage self that I wasn't completely wasting my money buying comics.

I know there are probably a lot of people who don't like the groups on facebook relating to getting so many people to join for whatever reason for whatever date. Nonetheless, there is a link some may be interested in. We CAN and we WILL find 1,000,000 who accept Evolution by June 2011.

    ^^

I've already decided not to join that group for the same reason I'm not joining the "We CAN and we WILL find 1,000,000 who accept Gravity" group.

There was a "Million people like evolution before June 2010" thing which petered out at the end of May at around half a million. Not quite sure why somebody's trying again.

This group is much more fun!

It was a direct response to a Creationism one. (the evolution one while not making it to a million, fared a lot better) Since the Creationists are trying again so too are the evolution group. Internet willy waving at its finest.

There was some issue with trademark - the old crest was either effectively in the public domain, or somehow easy to make a generic copy of. That was the official reasoning, as far as I recall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

Must have been the public domain thing, because it's a heck of a lot more complex than the new one.

A lot of creationists believe that having lots of people on their side increases their credibility. This group is just reply to that in terms that creationists can understand.

It adds nothing to the debate.

Whats interesting is that the councillors just regard it as keeping up a tradition, they arent offended on religious grounds. I've often contended that Irish catholicism is more of an ingrained habit than a religion. Just something you do because sure its what ya do!

Hmm, I'd ascribe different motives. To my mind, they're complaining on the grounds of tradition because they know given the usual mood of the country these days, complaining about stripping Christianity out of public life or whatever, would be met with more ridicule.

The brave councillor in question is one Luke 'Ming the merciless' Flanagan who ran on some sort of legalise cannabis stance in the past. Nice beard!!http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/services/corporate/lflanagan.html

am nitpicking. an agnostic does not believe in god. if he did believe in god, he would not be an agnostic.

say i am dubious about string theory as holding the solution to the laws of nature. so it's not a leap to say 'i don't believe string theory is the answer, but (because?) i am keeping an open mind'.

Of course they can  . I believe that Australia exists but I also believe in the possibility that it may not exist. Maybe everyone who supposedly goes there is brainwashed into thinking its real and all the satellite pics are projections of bond villian proportions. Who can really say for sure?
