I'm in Carpenterstown and for long distances I go to Porterstown, down to Lucan (via Strawberry Beds or Westmanstown), turn right and go to Leixlip, then to Maynooth (maybe take in Captain's Hill), on to Kilcock, Summerhill, Trim.

I think that there are only 3 traffic lights (Lucan, Leixlip exit off M4, Leixlip).

I generally did this route at 8am on a Sunday morning. Mid week traffic is likely to be quite different.

The areas @daymobrew mentions are a good bet. Often the back roads are quite pleasant with only the odd section of lunar surface. The road from Confey across to Moygaddy and on through Moyglare towards Kilcock is pretty good, for example.

I was going to recommend something similar to Damobrews route.

Also try Passifyoucan Moorofmeath Kellystown Lane Obelisk Lane Ladychurch Xroads Donadea Forest Killcock dunboyne.

Lovely route. I do some of it on weekday evenings and roads are quiet enough.
