Maybe a bit of an obvious question, but I want to make sure I'm not cross-chaining.

When do you switch from the small ring to the big ring - is it OK to ride in the fifth sprocket (Of 10) in both rings?

Yes. It's OK to ride in most sprokets with both rings. Just avoid big/big and small/small combos.

I usually try and avoid the two most crossy sprockets on either chainring.
