    Really interesting footage of an amateur assent of today's stage, just shows how tough is it.

    I'd say the Marie Blanque is worse in a way; certainly it is steeper (although shorter.) It was at the start with fresh legs though; the Tourmalet coming at the end would be harder on the day, you are generally pretty fecked at the end of these things.

    @Nick- the climbs in the Alps or Pyrenees are simply not comparable to anything we have here.

    Rode a stage in the alps a few years ago (Morzine/Avoiraz) 1st Cat ,it was the most physcal thing i have ever done and that climb had only a 6.8% gradient. Stayed in Avoiraz Ski Station for a few days and done some other climbs, the other road to Avoiraz (back road) has a gradient of 14% in places.
    My advise for anyone is to stay in the ski stations in the summer months and ride as many climbs as you can.

    Conar Pass: Their is nothing in ireland or the uk that can come close to these climbs. Its the sheer length, gradient and weather conditions.

    i will go back some day and ride the alp-d'huez stage.

    think the link probably refers to the etape. It was murder. 36 degree heat. All of the cols were doable; 7% av gradient but it was the length of them that was the killer. Its like reading about a storm.....dosent make sense until you are caught out in one.

    Was a spectacular event though....best thing ive ever done. Seriously planning on going next year
