    hi all,

I am looking to buy 4 new tyres 205/55 R16 in cork city. I picked up a advert flyer in Halfords yesterday for Kellehers(upper john st, blackpool, cork city) advertising cheap tyres for all brand names such as Goodyear, Michelin, Dunlop. Continental, and Pirelli.

I phone them today and they quoted me €30 per tyre, fitted and balanced, and he mentioned one of the brands mentioned above, cant remember which one.

Is this price very low for a new branded name tyre?

    Thanks all, in advance

There are a few places advertising tires for 30 Euro upwards in Cork. I doubt you'll get a 16" tire for that though. Most likely the 30 Euro offer is for a narrow 13 inch wheel.

Hmmmm euro30 for a 16" tyre sounds cheap alright...

just make sure they are not China's best brands like Gudyear, Michaelin, Doonlup. Kontinmental, and Purilly if you know what I mean. :D

I would reckon a tyre of any size for €30 would be dirt.

the flyer has tyres 205/65 R16 for €35

With tires, you get what you pay for. I've seen some horrible cheap tires which looked great and performed admirably in the dry turn a car into a shopping trolley with a wonkey wheel in the wet.

Just checked their FB page. 'Tread minimum 5mm' - in other words, part worn tires.

    half price for half worn.

    not a bargain,

for full price you can get a full tyre.

Part worn's worry me.. you just dont know what abuse they have had

Depends on the brand tbh. camskill.co.uk or eiretyres.com will give you a good idea - any bricks and mortar store that can come close to their prices is doing well.

205 refers to the width of the tire over the wheel, and 45/55 refers to the width of the tire wall, 45 would be smaller, or 'lower profile'.

    205 = width of tyre "205 mm"

55 or 45 = sidewall height = 55% or 45% of the width of the Tyre.

No such thing as a cheap tyre. Its either a good tyre or a bad tyre and if your the kind of person that cheaps out you really shouldn't be on the road.

I beg to differ with you.
There is such thing as a Cheap tyre
    BUT
There is no such thing as a GOOD tyre cheap ;)

Conversely many expensive tyres aren't great either, especially ones that have been around a good while and are somewhat living on past glories, eg some Pirelli tyres.

    Thanks I'm only learning.... :)

If you're still looking for tyres you might be interested in this... Just spoke to a lad who got tyres on his Jeep for a good price + Tracking + Balancing etc from a new startup company. The are called "Cost Plus Tyres" in Unit 5 Ballycurreen Ind Est, near Musgraves. (For the record I have no assocaition with them whatsoever).

You're not going to get new tyres for euro30 a pop but it's worth a phone call I guess for a quote.

I'd personally say away from half worn tyres etc... you don't know what kind of life they've had up to now, or how old they are etc.

    Cheers,
    CarMuppet

Well it depends on your definition of cheap!
Also, I like your Orwellian use of English.

    Well
In life it is exactly the same as everything
Would you like a cheap LCD Tv or would you like an quality one cheap

    As in
Cheap clothes or designer clothes cheap

    The list goes on

I'd have thought that abut €65 + would be more the norn.

Maybe it's a sell off, do keep in mind too that the new tyres should have that dreaded E mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 driddler

yes, i rang them and they have semperits for €75 each

    remoulds walk away

Correct: For the record it is illegal to sell remoulds for cars on the public roadway.
