Is giving your kid a stupid name akin to abuse?

I was wondering - all these kids of celebrities (it's not only celebrities!) who have aquired the most stupid first names thanks to their parents - is it a form of child abuse? I mean do the parents realise the kids will be laughed at just for their names in school?

Also normal people giving kids bad sometimes cynical names - is it right? Or what about "scummer" names like Sharon or Jacinta or "Anthony" - aka "Anto".

Also as an aside does your name say something about your social status? For example is a "Sharon" less likely or equally likely to get a job as a "Tracey" - or has an "Amy" the better chance?

Anyone that bases their judgements on people purely on their name are exactly the type of people I would try to avoid.

This case just took the pish all together:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/jul/24/familyandrelationships.newzealand

For those too lazy to click on the link they named their kid "Talula Does the Hula From Hawai" and subsequently lost custody of her.

Sharon, Anthony, Jacinta, Amy, Kevin, David, Ciaran, Declan

These are all perfectly fine names.

Your Right! names definitely have an impact on how people veiw them.

Take your user name for example. I veiw you a 40 year old fat virgin who sits at home in front of the computer soaping it to fetish porn.

He's not a girl though and Isreali's don't speak with a Dublin accent - which does make a difference.

Once came across a child who was called "Titass".

Maybe it was spelt quite like that, but that was the young lads name.

    Mad world!

What about calling a girl a typically boys name? If I told you some of my nieces and nephews name I guarantee you wouldn't know which were boys and which were girls.

Not for the same person though, I'd draw the line at 3.

Firstly, one of the richest and most successful businessmen in Ireland is named Anthony, you probably read his newspapers.
    Or who founded Ryanair

I hope you're not hiring people and checking applications if you're going to judge somebody by a "scumbag" name.

That is ridiculous, people might judge your address and decide that they don't want you working for them.
    But not your first name!

I once knew this boy named Sue.

(Actually no I didn't - I just heard about it in a song and thought I'd pretend I knew someone with that name to make a point or a joke or something. I don't know, I didn't really think it through. It's early, leave me alone. Where's my coffee?)

Good example. Giving him a stupid name certainly toughened that kid up.

Don't get how my username would suggest my name is Gareth.....

Anyway, who ever thinks names pigeon hole a person is a bit of a sad case and needs to look at more important thing in life.

It's the least the little fella will have to worry about given that every one of his mates will be lookin' to ride his ma.

Yeah but it shortens to Ming...if he got shìt about it he could turn into an evil bully and be known as Ming the Merciless.

I was thinking the same, give a kid a name like that and you've got an evil warlord in the making.

Only for a surname, and only if you have a friend with a dog named porkchop.

I'd much rather give my child an unusual name than let them have the same name as half the kids in their class in school.
